Blown my turbo!!
« on: March 01, 2016, 11:16:07 am »
So... coming back from a stag do in Bournemouth on Sunday my car started to rattle & my turbo dropped pressure and started squealing quite loud...

I've just had a call back from AM cars in Ilminster (Audi/VW Specialist) and have been quoted £1325.00 for a whole turbo/manifold and oil feed change.

Does anyone know if thats about right? i think he said it was 675.00 + VAT for the Turbo about 5 hours labor all in

Cheers

Sorry to hear that fella  :sad1:

I have no idea if that is a good price or not, but have you considered using the opportunity to upgrade the turbo?

Out of interest, what mileage is the car and was it remapped?

its got 69000 miles and no, its not re mapped. its got a set of twin take's on but thats it. I've thought about KO4 but i tbh i cant afford this amount so i doubt thats a possibility.

looks like it will be coming off the road for a few months while i get all the parts together

Sorry to hear. Cars can be a ball ache at times.

Have you considered a second hand turbo off the same model or k04? As long as there is no play in the turbo it should last you a while and be a shed load cheaper.

I'm going to look into a few options, i certainly cant afford to pay that right out. i would like to put a new one on though, just for peace of mind and re sale value when i come to sell it.

I'm wondering if i could buy an engine of similar mileage for less than that... but i end up on the conclusion that it will just let me down!

I know a few people who have used second hand turbos and they have been fine. As removed from cars that have had rear end and being stripped. Like I said as long as you can verify milage and have a look at the turbo shaft should be okay.

Or maybe look into getting yours refurbished? Not sure if that would be as cheap as first option though.

Have a word with someone like turbodevelopments.co.uk

I'm sure they can rebuild yours for a lot less than £1300!  They used to charge about £350+VAT to rebuild a K04 off a 1.8T back in the day.  Not sure what their pricing is on the TFSI flavour tho.

Nwurries.  Before putting a new one on, I would have the failure looked into because 69K is way too soon for a turbo to die, especially running standard boost pressure!

Maybe fault code it to look for turbo over-speeding faults.  That can happen if there's a boost leak.  Could also be oil feed problems but it's hard to say for sure without seeing the car.

As above... 69k seems like a short life for the turbo.

My neighbours 07 gti is on 158k has been remapped for the past 40k of that and is still on its original turbo!

As for price then I'd look at a good second hand turbo and then possibly fit it your self? It's not a big job on a mk5.

Also heard people picking up a full K04 kit second hand for £1000 or less so keep an eye out for Edition 30's or Audi S3's in breakers yards... That way for £1000 maybe less you can have a big difference for the money you pay out...
