Few basic mk5 questions (new owner)
« on: August 01, 2011, 09:06:36 pm »
Hi. My brother picked up an 06 2.0 petrol gti dsg today  (by the way is this called a TFSI??) I have a mkiv 4motion, so know a bit about golfs, but not much about mkv's as I've never owned one. Anyway, job number one was get the garage to agree to sort the non-working air-con before buying the car  :happy2: A week and a half later they sorted it - it required a new compressor   So thanks to the boards for alerting me to that potential problem. Initially they just gassed it up and claimed it was ok.

Here's a few pics. My questions are: we want to retrofit cruise control. I understand it could be more difficult on an earlier version than later ones? Anyone got a link to a good guide, or recommendation as to which garage to use who know what they're doing in North London area?

Second, what type of dash is this? Is it a half-version? If so, what are the potential advantages of fitting a full version? i.e. what does it allow / do that this one doesn't.

Lastly I'm wanting to buy something off  SteveyD (a pipe for my 4motion) but I can't pm him or reply on the for sale section. I've sent an email but no joy - and I don't know if he got it. Could someone pm him to get him to look at this thread please?
thanks
Chris

Welcome Chris.

Cruise retrofit should just be a new stalk, and coding. It's possible there may be a can bus issue, but unlikely.

You have a midline dash, there. A highline cluster has a full height display, and can show more data, such as audio track  and sat nav direction/compass(dependant on head unit), as well as access to the set up menus such as convenience (set lights on delay after stopping etc).

Having just gone to a highline, it's a big step forward if the car is equipped to take advantage of it. If you have multifunction buttons & RNS510 nav unit, it's a must. As the car is DSG, fitting MFSW buttons is straightforward as well.

You should look in the VCDS area at the sticky for highline replacement. You need to source a compatible unit to swap out your midline. You'll need to scan the car with VCDS to get your midline part number or pull out the cluster.

yeah there's LOTS of info to try and get my head around. Looking at some posts on polar FIS etc and I've no idea what it all means

It has basic radio not 510 etc. Here's a (poor) pic to see what I mean

re the interior: it's actually genuine uk car, one owner, 28000 miles. got some odd options like rear parking sensors, and electric sunroof which seems pretty rare on these cars.

So, good things to buy would be full height 'highline' display; cruise control; then later maybe a multi-function steering wheel?

cheers all

edit here's my mkiv

similar interior!

I'd say your first is RNS510, MFSW buttons can be found on German eBay from time to time, or are £70 a side from your dealer. Both of these mods should plug in easily.

If you get RNS510 you need to check your canbus revision, some K and earlier ones can allow the battery to drain when you fit the nav unit. Search, here are plenty of posts on this.

I've got a Polar FIS+ and it's brilliant, but you need a highline for this to work. That will be the most difficult one; getting a good highline of the correct part number & the correct car (GTI as opposed to GT diesel or R32 as they are different).

Beware, you are entering a forum that will tempt you to empty your bank account in ways you never thought. It happened to me :signLOL:

As long as it's a DSG wheel with paddle shift. For manual cars, you need a complete wheel and slip ring, and possibly steering controller. It's a case of removing the airbag cover, old blanks out, MFSW parts in, and your done. It's a 15 minute job, although you may need to code with VCDS after.

Nice car, the beige interior option was available until 2006ish I think.

It's a TFSI, Turbo - Fuel stratified injection. Fancy way of saying it's direct injection.

....Even earlier than 2006, IIRC, and very rare indeed. That blue colour was discontinued early too  :sad1:. It's marmite: You either love it or hate it.  :happy2:

Lovely car , Ive not seen that colour combo before! Now...is there a Laser Blue GTI out there with the Beige interior? I wonder how rare that would be in the UK!
