ANOTHER what Tyre post!
« on: December 29, 2011, 12:34:39 pm »
So after 30k miles (18 months) the Continental Sport Contacts need replacing. I was hoping to replac the alloys at the same time as the tyres but i just can't find a set at a decent enough price. If you have a set of Classix's knocking around let me know :happy2:

Working on the basis i will be sticking to my current alloys and because of the miles i do c25k PA, most of which is motorway and A roads i have narrowed my options to;

Goodyear Efficient Grip
Continental Sport Contact
Hankook Ventus S1
Uniroyal Rainsport 2

The Jetta is completely standard (for the moment)

For what its worth, I ran Rainsport2 for 'poor weather' use (rather than a true winter tyre) on my Impreza STi and found them to be excellent all round.

No experience of the others....

Have you looked at Pirelli P Zero Rosso's with the asymetric pattern?

Brilliant all weather tyre and really welll priced.

I paid 100 plus VAT per corner, inclusive of fitting, valves and balancing.

Worth a look I'd say.

Hmm, I don't think the Rosso's will last the mileage he wants, though. They are still more grip than longevity IMHO

You are right, though. They are a cracking tyre.

I second that, I've got them all round and find them superb, also a lot quieter than the Bridgestone RE050A's I had on before.

I have had P Zero's on previous cars (Mk4 Golf GTi, Mk4 Golf V5 & Bora) and found them to be excellent but found longevity to be an issue as i never managed to get more than 18k out of them before they needed changing.

You won't go far wrong with another set of Conti Sport Contacts Ant.  (they are the ones i would pick from your list)

I've recently fitted Goodyear Assymetric 2's and in the 800 odd miles I've done since fitting I think they are brilliant. Far better than the Dunlop Sport Maxx GT that were factory fitted. I would even say from initial impressions that they are better than the PS3's I had on my last car.

Well worth a look. I paid £540 for 4 fitted (225/40/18's)

I've sat in a Mk5 GTI shod with these. Simply brilliant. Very quiet with a fabulous ride.

The owner of the car says the handling is exceptional and their wet weather performance is excellent. The best tyres he's ever had.

Now I need to buy some to replace my Bridgestones which are noisy, give a rough ride, slip madly in the wet but have excellent rim protection and a very good wear rate.

It's a toss-up between the Asymmetric 2 and ContiSport 5 tyres. Both brilliant tyres. The Goodyear seems to be slightly better value.

Conti CS3s are bloody brilliant tyres. Check with VW as well as i'm sure someone on here posted that they priced matched with internet prices.

From what I understand, the ContiSport Contact 5 tyre replaces the Conti CS3.
