Project EOS - AKA Mrs Very Cherry's Broomstick
« on: April 18, 2009, 04:07:06 pm »
About a year ago, a Monday saw a trip to Helston VW to visit Mark and take out an EOS for a spin for the mrs. After a go in a DSG diesel to experience the shifting we headed out for 30 minutes. The car feels pretty solid and holds the road very well considering the weight. With the top dropped and the wind deflector in place we hit 80mph and suffered no wind or sound inside the cockpit so in all very pleased with the car. The styling just needs sorting, but we'll get to that.

After agreeing that we want one we pawed over a 2.0 fsi. now theres alot of confusion with these little letters. The 2.0 turbo as found in the gti was labeled an fsi with the i being red and non turbo cars being silver. this caused confusion so they then badged it the tfsi, and have now finally settled for tsi. its the most responsive engine in the range so is the natural choice for the project.  I chose the turbo rather than the V6 as the weight of this thing is immence and so tuning was needed and its cheaper and easier to tune a turbo car.

Just in px they had a reflex silver 2.0 tfsi, with nappa leather. yet to be advertised it was suffering with 2 rear scratched quarters and a scratched door and scuffed alloys but other than that, with 13K on the clock they had it up for £22995.00. so with some haggling, were getting the car sprayed and repaired, 18 months warranty and a free wind deflector for the princely sum of £20750.00. The car was ready for collection on the friday....but we were not collecting it....oh no...there were plans afoot

First the small things, with the interior staying stock as it's lush as it is, the addition of one of these was deemed necessary as we dont want the tax disk going walkies when the tops dropped:

Rhe plan was a full caractere bodykit in total coming to £1590.90 inc delivery and VAT which consisted of front bumper with grills, rear bumper, 2x sideskirts and rear spoiler. onto that there is also a stainless twin exit catback zorst to finish the rear off, and fingers crossed the plan for it was to turn out something like this:

the rear badge to be replaced with one of these costing £8:

Not normally a fan of these but to help loose that weird EOS stare i planned calming it down with a pair of headlight spoilers from JE Design at just under £70:

The dealership sent the car straight to a paintshop without the mrs even seeing it yet let alone drive it....this is all for her so was very cloak and dagger

Next spend as a private plate EO55 *** the stars being the mrs's name and set me back just over £300 onto the car.

....and the deliveries began:

Zorst:

Front spoiler:

Carbon plates:

The skirts with vented scoops:

Rear diffuser and boot spoiler:

The eyebrows:

Carbonio CF induction:

And then the rims:

Got the phone call from the bodyshop saying they were about to start sorting the car but were unsure on what they were doing kit fitting wise as they had no images of the finished kit. I was expecting a call before they began anyway so armed with my photos i headed up to Carnkie Bodyshop. Considering its VAG approved its quite a small place tucked into the Cornish countryside but the vw dealer swore by them.

when i arrived the EOS was sat outside, front grills off and the new apron balanced on. The owner Chris introduced himself and we wandered around the car, he explained the front and rear bumpers will go on very simply and the areas behind the new grills we be sprayed black to mask them from sight. the side skirts however are designed to be glued in the center and his concern was that the ends would flap about so he suggested mastiking them in black.....to my horror.

He also suggested a bracket to be made up and them blended in properly...to which i quickly assured him was the only was i would accept it and said it would be crap if simply glued then filled with black mastik!...to which he agreed.

we also discussed wether to smooth in the kit or leave panel lines, i went for the latter as smoothing will make it look to 'modded' and i'm aiming for a factory look when finished. i also spotted 2 stone chips on the wings at the front and one more on the front bumper under the lights, about £200 to fix so i pushed this as a dealership cost as it shouldnt be mine.

once new badge placement was sorted i took a good look at the ride height and even though its going to be riding on 19 x 8.5  rims getting this thing low with roof up or down is gunna be a headscratcher

i requested that all of the caractere logos embossed into each part of the kit to be blended out and made arrangements for them to fit the zorst. the car  i noticed that a wing mirror coating was flaking which was another warranty thing. cost wise they are between £800-£1000 depending on wether the dealership picks up the tab for the stone chips.

Sat waiting to go inside:

The rear valance being test fitted over the shiny new Sebring cat back:

I chose to have the inner section of the valance satin blacked with the outer rolled edge to go to reflex silver

Getting the kit sanded and keyed ready for paint:

Flat spots and the embossed caractere logos blended out

The front masked off to take car of the stone chips:

The front outers are readied for paint, they will be done in satin black also so that they 'disappear' behind the grills:

Laying down the Reflex Silver:

and my first real glimpse:

The last of the trial fitting shots

heres a better shot, show the zorst nicely and the cutout caractere logo. the tails were a bit of a mission to lacate correctly though and the old backbox was raped of tubing to help widen and space the pipes out the back

car can be graced by one of these now and the 2.0 TFSI script scrubbed off. should keep a few people guessing whats under the hood once its mapped

test fitting of the eyebrows which will be getting painted into reflex silver, happy with these dispite the long wait for arrival from italy they certainly add to the aggressiveness of the car without being 'chav'

i decided to go for the grill into satin black, which was simply removal of the chrome strips and after prep just satining them into the correct colour. going to leave the chrome goatee as 1. i quite like it with this look and 2. it will help to blend the eyebrows in

the center caps for the alloys come in a plain chrome so they were sent to a local signwriter specialist who gloss blacked them with a chrome .:R logo inside...

ive decided for the time being not to lower the car as when the hood is down the car sits quite low onto the 19's due to all of the weight over the rear, add to that the deep front spoiler and speed bumps would be a nightmare. being honest though it looks just fine...and i dont have the cost of lowering now either

added a few more little bits:

I tell you........I racked up the brownie points doing this, when she saw the car for the first time it was parked inside the VW dealership with people pawing all over it

when she got in it and drove off i dont think should could have been happier  :innocent:

And after todays wash:

Results achieved using sheep puppet and Lusso wash from autoperfection, followed by Dodo Lime and Prime, then the Lusso wax from autoperfection.

Rate the wax highly! very very very nice stuff, the sheep puppet also simply shames the meg one...but the Lusso wash... need another go with it. It's very foamy, smells nice and dries off the car well... but if i'm honest, AG shampoo and conditioner does a better job

Forgot to mention, as well as the CIA the car is also running a stage 2 Custom Code map and she puts out 243bhp with 249ft/lbs of torque

with the weight over the back when the lids down you can break traction in every gear including 6th!

Good project, good for getting on with it, but its not too my taste. I love the EOS but would have gone for a subtle oem touch.
