London for a few days....where to eat?

I'm taking my wife and 9 yr. old son to London for a few days, we are staying near the London Eye and going to see the Lion King show at the lyceum theatre.

So I'm looking for some places to eat?

What are your personal recommendations? (other than the usual suspects Pizza Express, Wagamama, gbk etc)

Close to the London Eye at the South Bank is a place called 'The Canteen' - good quality traditional english fare at a reasonable price.

Your just a short walk across the bridge to Covent Garden so these I would recommend:

Wohaca is good for mexican street food

Belgo if you like Belgium beer and mussels

Jamies Italian - is whats it is

Herman ze German near embankment tube - choice of german sausages with all the trimmings, nice snack for lunch

If your down on a Friday or Saturday morning its worth heading over to London Bridge and checking out Borough Market - lots of free samples to try and good selection of street food for lunch

If you want the best steak in town without paying the earth then jump in a cab to Battersea and head to a place called Santa Maria Del Sur

There are 2 'Cote' restaurants in Covent Garden - French(ish) - like an up to date Cafe Rouge but with really good prices and Lunch specials.

Yo Sushi - all over the London.  My daughter (aged 9) loves the conveyor belt on which the little plates glide around on, yummy sushi and chicken dishes.  Not a cheap meal if you really go for it but there are vouchers available on the Yo Sushi and other voucher websites.

I'd personally steer clear of Hard Rock Cafe - the queue of foreign tourists can be crazy long.  Much better really great Burgers and US fare is at Byrons Really rate this place.

Just don't go to The Ivy!! (£14.50 for an average quality burger, £4.00 for crappy chips etc, And then £2 per person cover charge and 12.5% service charge added to the bill!! )

Rules Restaurant is brilliant but expensive.

Le Gavroche... good.... expensive.

If you like japanese, Taro just behind the palace near leicester square. 2/3 door down there is a superb italian restaurant called La Porchetta, one of the best italians i have eaten.

There are so many good ones... just depends what cuisine your after.

With the nine-year-old in mind, the Rainforest Cafe in Shaftesbury Avenue near Piccadilly Circus.  Stunning animatronics and good food that's not toooooo expensive.  For hot chocolate / coffee / cakes at a very reasonable price, go to the Crypt at St Martins in the Fields in Trafalgar Square.  There's a Pizza Express in the Strand opposite Charing Cross station, but you can eat from a chain's menu anywhere - do something different!

At a slight tangent, if you were tempted to take a river cruise - don't bother.  Take a Thames Clipper round trip.  It's a fast river bus service using catamarans.  You'll see the sights and, if you don't know what they are, buy a book for a fiver.
And don't get ripped off with a tourist bus, either.  The route 15 still uses the old Routemaster and takes in Trafalgar Square, St Pauls Cathedral and plenty of other venues.
Keep your wallet and phone in an inside pocket in crowds (especially if you're checking a map), and enjoy yourselves!
