GTi side skirts

Can someone clear this up, are there 2 different types of standard GTi side skirts for the 3 door and 5 door?  If so does anyone have the part numbers and explain what the difference is?

I looked into some for mine, as far as Im aware there is only two types of these skirts

3/5 door as also the same.

GTI < which have a dimpley effect
R32 < which are smooth

That's what I thought too, not sure how VAG can justify the massive price difference for a smooth primered skirt compared to the textured GTi one?  Just took me half an hour to sand and prime the first skirt ready for colour coding, so an hour or so for two........

Exactly - unless you get up close/rub them or inspect them well (when painted) i dout you would even tell

You need to sand them completely flat mate, I prepped my GTi rear valance and I missed a couple of areas, really does notice where it's painted, probably because the 'dimples' reflect the light more.....

When I telephoned VW he gave me different part numbers for 3 door and 5 door side skirts, for GTI and ED30 & R32...

There is apparently a difference, but I didn't get to the bottom of exactly what....but they are different

Bloody hell!! Just put the first coat of colour down, the ones I have are from a 3 door, to go on a 5 door????

Is it an easy job to fit these to a non GTI? I'm looking at getting a Golf Mk5 GT TDI next and I have already started looking at mods even though it won't be here until the end of the year :)

I think I will just be going for the textured GTI skirts so is it an easy bolt on job? I presume they aren't too expensive given they are just plastic?

I got mine used from another forum member, they were a bit scuffed but I have completely sanded them flat and will be colour coding them. 

Regarding fitting, piece of cake mate, all you need are 4 x adapters available from the stealers or your local TPS part number: 1K0 853 493, these fit in to holes under the sill (you will find a rubber bung in this hole).  I think you need some extra screws as well although each end of the skirts are secured with existing screws in the arch and underneath at the back, the top has an adhesive strip running down its length.  You can also fit support strips, but afaik most people don't bother.

Just to note, I have offered the 3 door skirts up to the side of swmbo's 5 door Golf and they fit fine.

Thanks for that mate sounds easy. Really don't want to sell the S3 but with my mileage increasing significantly and the fact I can make about £7-8k profit selling the S3 and buying a 2.0 TDI Golf GT it makes sense really as I'm moving the business into a unit later this year.

I bought side skirts last year for my three door Gt Sport TDi.

I used a registration number off a three door gti golf that was for sale on ebay to get the parts. The part no's of the three door versions I was supplied with are 1K3853859B9B9 and 1K3853860B9B9. They fitted perfectly.

When I offered the skirt up this morning I actually fixed it temporarily using the existing screws at each end, I then checked the fixing points underneath and the line up perfectly with the holes in the sills which accept the adaptor kit.  The acid test will be next week when I have finished spraying/ polishing them and try to fit for real!

Cool ! take some pics of the fit please as im getting some for mine . are you just using the fixing screws at each end then bonding the skirt to the sill?

I will fix using the screws at each end and then get the adapter kit from TPS. 

To fix the top part I have got a 5m roll of automotive exterior double sided foam tape, which is how they are fitted from the factory.  The only thing I won't be doing is using the support strips.
