5n0035730 Retro fit problems (possibly wiring) **RESOLVED**
« on: April 22, 2012, 11:16:14 pm »
Today I set about installing a bluetooth kit to my car.
I have highline 974 cluster and RCD510 head unit, MFSW (with menu and start buttons).
All wiring and the module has been installed.
I used the following plug and play loom:

from www.carsystems.pl

There are 2 issues, and may be related?
Firstly there are two coding options in vcds, both give errors.
I have adjusted the coding to 0021141 and now only have errors relating to the microphone and antenna:

Code: [Select]
Address 77: Telephone        Labels: 3C0-035-730.lbl
   Part No SW: 5N0 035 730 B    HW: 5N0 035 730 B
   Component: J412                8502
   Revision: 00015000    Serial number: 0000B7A074998
   Coding: 0021141
   Shop #: WSC 35110 377 09999
   VCID: 2757E24496F635B

2 Faults Found:
01523 - Microphone for Telephone (R38)
010 - Open or Short to Plus
01524 - Antenna for Telephone
            011 - Open Circuit

Could it be that the plug and play loom is incorrect and may need some pins swapping over?
I guess the errors above is what is preventing pairing with my phone.
Thanks
Jason

EDIT:
This was caused by the fact that RCD510 does not support voice control and so the microphone should be wired directly to the bluetooth unit.

Hope so!
I have got the pin outs for the head unit so will compare to those on the loom and see if I can make sense of it. Hopefully the antenna / mic wires will just need swapping?

Hi mate,

I connected mine to get voice control with the loom from carsystems as it seems you had as well, this as follows;

Its best if you have a look at the pinouts from the RNS510 to determine their locations first, taking notice of the

Multi-pin connector 3, 12-pin, for telephone and microphone signals.

 http://www.my-gti.com/529/volkswagen-rns-510-pin-assignments

1: Connect MIC plug into loom plug ( pins 1,7 of rns)

2:  Connect the other 2 white plugs together (pins 4,9 to the bluetooth module pins 11,12)

3:  Code the Gateway and telephone module 77.

Hope this helps.

Heres a link that might help,go down to the diagram part it shows the two methods of connecting up the bluetooth depending on what you have.

Thanks for the quick reply. The pin outs are the same as the rcd 510.

I'll have a look in the morning, it will make more sense with the loom infront of me.
Thanks

I've checked my loom and it appears to wired in the correct way, to pins 1+7 4+9.
My thoughts now are that the actual pins +ve -ve may be the wrong way round.
Going to swap them later and check operation on vcds.
If its not that, I'm stumped.

I double checked and traced the wiring from the BT module to the back of the head unit. Also traced the wiring from the microphone to the back of the head unit.
Ive checked the pins at the BT and HU end and all look correct from the information i found so far.

I have ben playing with different coding options and depending on the coding, different errors appear.
Could this issue be coding related? The vcds suggestion of 0020035 or 0020055 does not work.
The closest I can get is 0021141 but im still left with two errors.

If connect the mic to the BT instead of HU the mic error clears.
I hope this is something really obvious that I have missed!

I have found some coding options for this module (A revision) although mine is a B revision.

Something about LINE wake-up on or off; something about MUTE function perhaps on or off or the key action. There is also a three button module fitted on some cars and I am not sure if this refers to the buttons in the wheel or in the console. The german refers to a three-button control module, so it is probably the buttons either in the headlining for SOS and breakdown etc or similar ones in the centre console.

Thanks Eddie,
I tried your coding (0026221) and it got rid of the antenna error but I think that is because the 5th digit (2) turns off the antenna diagnosis.
I still had the mic error which makes me think there is a wiring problem.
I also noticed that the star button did not work and I was unable to pair the phone.

Im going to make alist of the coding options and try one by one.

Will keep trying.

I have tried different coding options but cannot get rid of the two errors.
They indicate a wiring fault. Not sure if the antenna is faulty?
With the mic, the error goes when plugged into the BT module but errors when plugged into the HU.
Could there be a pin wrong on the quad connector?
I have been in touch with car systems where I got the loom from and they are being helpful, but not provided a solution at the moment.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

Weird that it still don't work as it should mate I'll have a look at my coding to see if theres any differences.

Maybe the more knowledgable will come along soon to advise on the matter.

Still no joy with this so ive been double checking everything. I've even swapped to C revision module but still the same issues.

Module 77:

Measuring blocks:

As I have the module wired for voice control, I have pins 11 + 12 on the 54 pin connector wired to pins 4 + 9 on the head unit (12 pin connector D).
The mic is then wired into pins 1 + 7 on the head unit (12 pin connector D).

Photos of connectors (I have labelled the connector letters and pin numbers to aid identification).

Connector diagram from head unit (RCD510)

Socket on head unit:

Connector on loom (connector D is for telephone and microphone signals):

Connector D showing wires:

Turned upside down to show bottom row of wires:

The interesting thing is that if I connect the microphone straight to the bluetooth unit instead of the head unit, the microphone fault goes away.
This could indicate an issue with the connection between bluettoh module and head unit, pins 4 + 9??

Im not sure about the antenna fault though as that has a fakra connector straight into the bluetooth module.

Bit more on this (in the hope some one will be able to help me).
I've been in touch with Ross Tech who have been helpful, but I think the issue is a wiring faault with either the microphone or the loom.
However, I also get this error when tring to set the Radio to 'telephone preparation'.
I guess this setting is for the built in car cradle, but im not sure:

Im also trying to get help from carsystems.pl where the loom was purchased from but they are not much help.
