Front Wing Rust Directive from VW!!!!
« on: June 11, 2012, 09:19:37 pm »
Went to Leicester VW today and Lee from the body shop had a look at both wings on my 2005 GTi with rust on both wings and where wings join the sills.

Without hesitation he confirmed that both wings will be replaced at NO COST TO ME and I will have a courtesy car as well. I will have to wait to July though as there is a back log.

He did not take any photos and just used a paint depth gauge to check no work had been done before.

He told me that just this week VW have acknowledged the issue!

So finally some good news  :jumpmove:

Sounds good, went for mine today at chelmsford and having it processed tomorrow (it was gone 3pm and he wanted to get home for the football). He had 4 in this week for sills/arches so looks good for my claim

I took mine in for photos on Friday, lets just hope they OK the go-ahead with the work. More important I hope they nip the cause of the rust in the bud, the foam block behind the wheelarch!

Good news.

I've been thinking more about this and if I should try again at VW.

My problems are...

-One of my wings has previously been painted.
-If they replace the wings they will need to blend the colour onto the doors, bonnet and bumper otherwise it will look terrible, and I've heard that they refuse to do this?

I get my car back from the dealers tomorrow with 2 brand new wings. My car's tornado red too so I'll let you know what kind of paint job they do with regards to blending in etc.

I had just the offside wing replaced, I have a tornado red too, and the wok was great- colour match wise. Win could have been a little better aligned but still good. It was done by a local garage as VW had to outsource, but as they were a merc repair place I didn't mind :)

check the car under a yellow street light and see if the wing looks a different colour.

Cant see how they can justify painting the whole wing to the edge but not blending.

Does this issue effect 08  Golfs   , Id just pay and have the bonnet painted and the bumper so the whole front had a nice new paint job.

....The foam strips inside the wings are cut back to avoid the issue on later cars so you shouldn't have the issue. But if you have any rust on a 08 car you should apply under body/rust warranty anyway.

My bodyshop repaired my wings FOC and totally removed the strips instead of just cutting them back - They're unnecessary on a petrol engine car and were included for diesels (extra noise and vibration) according to the PDF.

Picked my car up this afternoon, they've done an excellent job. Looked at it from all angles and under a yellow street light and you can't tell that the paint is any different from the other panels.

The good thing with tornado red is that it's not metallic so the bodyshop will have t-cut the other panels when valeting the car so it all looks brand new. That worries me a bit as I've heard that the paintwork isn't very thick, particularly around the tailgate section.
