When you say they are connected to the 12v socket , is it connected to the wires for the socket or connected to a plug for the socket  :scared:

its not hard wired into the socket, i got a plug for the socket e.g phone charger end and chopped it off. then simply connected + and - together.

Nice work, I've had the bits to do this for months but have been really slow about doing it!

I've got some old MK3 Golf side repeaters and bulb holders, I'll smash the repeaters and salvage the bulb locater bit, then drill a big hole in the cluster and glue the locater over the top.  Thats the clusters completed, then I'll get my best mate to wire the bulb holders to the outer tail lamps, so he'll make a loom and run it all the way round the tailgate, through the grommets and back down to the outer clusters.  This will make it all OEM and they'll work with the headlamp switch.

sound like a good plan tom,

you just need to watch how big the bulbs are on one side of each inner light as there is very little room for the bulb to stick out (connector end) as the first type of bulb i used would let the housing sit flush fit the boot.

What type of bulbs did you use, and how did you hold them in?

These ones I have take standard capless bulbs, the guide I have here also used them, but his method was a bit strange!

i used these type of bulbs: http://www.asihome.com/images/int-ml18w4c.jpg

to secure them i drilled a hole so they were a tight fit and then sealed with silicone

Old thread revival...

Nice info, thanks. I was driving behind my Golf the other day as my wife was driving it, and thought that better use could be made of the tailgate cluster.

Has anyone done this by tapping into the rear light looms, so it works with the light switch?

Any CANBUS faults, or a reduction in brightness due to power drain of the additional bulbs?

I have done this mod so that they come on with lights.

It will bring the bulb warning on dash as you will be tapping into can bus system.

I got round it though
