rear brake disc gaurd

has anybody ever had there rear brake disc cover come loose on there gti?
if so does anybody know how much they are roughly? also do you have to take the disc off to replace it?

they are pretty prone to a bit of rust and corrosion and in time just rot away and rattle. They are £19.00 plus the dreaded vat. Think the disc does have to come off though.

Not only does the disc have to come off to change the guard but you also have to pull the rear hub/bearing 

Best bet is to cut the old guard to remove it, then remove the strengthening rib on the new ones to create an open 'V' to allow it to pass over the rear bearing housing, makes no difference to the strength of the guard and makes it a 10 minute job 

I also believe you can use the rear guards from the 2wd V6 Eos as that uses the 310mm rears albeit with a 2wd rear hub so the bolt holes will line up with the GTI, these are open 'V' type from the factory so will slip past the bearing

the disc has to come of as well;know on some golf the disc will come of with out removing the pad carrier and then remove the wheel bearing hub

Yeah I've done it myself to both rear guards as mine had corroded around the mounting bolt holes and were catching on the disc edge now and then, I removed the old ones by taking out the screws and cutting the spar on the guard with some tin snips, then removed the same spar from the new ones and treated the edge with rust proof and black hammerite (it can't be seen when fitted as its behind the calipers anyway)  

As the R32 comes with open guards I thought I'd give it a go, worked perfectly and saved the hassle of pulling the hub and as the mounting holes are right at the edge next to the spar it's still rock solid without it  

This should help in showing where to cut the guard etc..
