Rumble on startup and occasionally when pulling away
« on: October 04, 2013, 01:00:45 pm »
No error codes, not that I thought there would be.
Turn car over, get a rumble which seems to emanate from the offside.

Perhaps Alternator Belt Tensioner or Pulley?
Belt "looks" ok with no noticeable signs of perishing or damage... the tensioner seems to bounce about a bit though, not sure if that's normal engine movement.

Is this the right part for MY2005 GTI 06F903315

Cheers bud, sounds definitely possible, not something I'd probably tackle on my own though...
The way the tensioner is bouncing about; something needs adressing there, so I'll grab the part and belt see if that's the issue, if not, it'll be to the garage. :sad1: Somthing I hate doing, lol.

May as well swap out the alternator pulley too, they're known to split over time.
Had one before cause a rumble at idle on a Pug.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Quite possible it's not the tesnioner and just the pulley mate (but I'll get both)... do you need a special tool to take off the Alternator Pulley?

I've got a M10 Spline, but looking at this tool: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WHILE-STOCKS-LAST-Laser-3307-Alternator-Tool-M10-Spline-1-2-Drive-/130943168633?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item1e7cd23079 it would seem it's a two stage process, with the M10 holding the shaft whilst you work at the nut with a spanner... anyone done this job without said tool? :happy2:

Thanks for the help guys... vid is great just what I need. :happy2:

Think I may just grab the pulley (already carry a belt): this the one? (Mk5 2005 Golf GTI): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380695215644?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

What's recommended; trying to get the pulley off in situ or in a vice with alternator out?  Don't have an impact driver.

Look at this link some good tooling advice!

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=234251

I done the last one on the car - mind it was tight - 15mins max if things go well.

Cheers dude... so the Laser Tool won't allow enough access on Mk5 GTI then? (can't find it cheaper than £15 quid either, which is a "bit" of a ripoff, lol)

Did you have to make your own tool... if it comes to it, I'll take the Alty out and whack it in the vice.

Just had a quick look at this, tensioner pinned (hard going when you have a stage 2 AC tear), belt off, placing screwdriver down alternator... pulley locks both ways, so I asumme it's goosed  (should freewheel one way shouldn't it?)

Regarding tools, can we just use a 33T Spline?:

or does it need the special £15 tool above to lockout... ordering pulley now.

Should turn this into a Alternator how to thread with all the questions.

I modded the Laser Tool as its an easy job insitu then - removing the alternator to me is just another item to go wrong!

Yes, it should freewheel in one direction.

I repeat,it will be tight and requires you to consider where you hand may end up for grazes etc.
