ticking
« on: April 03, 2015, 12:54:24 pm »
Can anyone tell me this tick? I don't know whether it's always done it or whether it's started recently to be honest! Ive read it could be the injectors or it could be something worse. Does yours sound like this... 05 dsg gti

Sounds like the injectors to me! Normal noise from the TFSI engine

Where Napoleons armies marched with horse and musket and Hitlers Reich crumbled in blood and rubble, the warriors of Armageddon do battle against the landscape of hell now indeed thrive the ARMOURERS

Yep. I'd agree. Injectors and HPFP. Lovely quiet engines these!

Pretty sure it's the injectors just to clarify,  realised today if you gently feather the accelerator, you can hear the ticking build up into a continuous hum.

Does this make sense? Or if it was a bad cam belt was the cause would the ticking also increase?

Here is how mine sounded before and after i changed the cam chain, tensioner and adjuster.
The after is much quieter due to mic positioning but it sounds a little less like a diesel now.

before:

after:

after with revs:

@dazza Has anyone actually had a cam chain snap or does it get changed to mainly prevent the noise?

Im mainly the plastic tensioner that wears down and can snap/break. But as you are doing that you so the chain too.

My belt/chain(which is it?) should be ok, it got changed 20k miles ago with the water pump, Would the tensioner get changed at the same time?

Just wanna ask again, would the ticks increase in frequency with gentle acceleration if it was a bad cam belt anyway?

Dazza, in your audio I can only hear one ticking, in the “fixed” audio it is slightly quieter. Should I be hearing two types of ticking – one being injectors and one being the bad cambelt?
