Oil Pick up Inspection/Replacement/Cleaning

Hi all.

Ill be dropping the oil in a month or so, and it got me thinking.

Shall I take off the sump and check the oil pick up pipe just for peace of mind? Is there any point in doing it, or should I just cross my fingers and hope that I dont see a OIL warning light on the dashboard or worse?

Should I check it? Then clean it? or replace it?

If you are thinking about it, then do it.

It was always a mild concern for me when I had the ED30 though I know mine had a new sump pan the year before I bought it.

Just need to make sure we have the right tools to get to the awkward sump bolts.

Long allen keys with the wobble end or wobble bit on your extension.  Bit awkward but a straighforward job.  Hopefully it's nice and clean but may aswel put your ramps to use and get it checked :)

So only replace it, if its full of crap?? Or replace anyway seeing as the sump is off?

Might as well replace it while the sump is off. I did mine for peace of mind recently. The pick up was dirty but not full of crud.
The whole job took about 4 hrs, awkward bolts as mentioned. I also spent time really cleaning out the sump. No real sludge but some hard baked scale.
The latest pick up pipe is supposed to be better than the original. Not sure I could see much difference though.
You will need a new o ring gaket and some of the special silicone for the sump. I bought VW stuff at enormous cost! I still have half a tube you can have for postage if you PM me.

If you've got the time the pickup pipe will clean up as good as new but your best refitting with a new Oring.
Just make sure you've got some good quality cleaning rags,degreaser and cardboard to do the cleaning job on,this will allow a simple tidying up after cleaning the parts down if your working on your drive!

Do i also need to replace the Turbo oil line gasket 058145757A??
