Buying off the forum

Just a brief one… Wanting to buy some used bits off here. If the seller will accept PayPal do I send the money as payment for goods or get the seller to invoice me? As I have heard varying story’s on which is the safer option.

As Joe says goods is safer and only 3.4% +20p to your cost, however if you are happy with the seller - check their sale posts and general posts etc, then no reason why you couldn't send personal - up to you of course  :happy2:

If you see words to this effect you'll be fine:

We shall require of you the following urgently by fax:

1. Name, Telephone and/or fax Numbers of beneficiary                           
 2. Name and full address
  3. Complete particulars of the bank account where you wish the funds to be transferred.  This should include the account Number, Bank Address, the Telephone, Fax and Telex numbers of the bank

My colleagues and I have some fruitful discussions with relevant top officials of both the Federal Ministry of Finance (FMF) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and they have agreed to cooperate in the transfer.  An application for funds transfer shall be made at the appropriate Ministries in favour of the beneficiary (you or your company).  This process make the operation legal according to the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Make sure you get anything posted recorded and signed for and ask when it will be posted after you pay for it,

Seriously, paypal goods if you can plus recorded or special delivery depending on the value.

Mind you, i bought my evoms off a well known forum member in December, paid via bank transfer and it arrived 3 days later in tip top condition.  :happy2:

It depends who the seller is, what their post history is like, whether people have met up with them and purchased items in the past. I would have no problem with bank transfer or paypal gift payments if they meet the requirements.

If they are new to the forum with the bare minimum of posts required to sell, then excercise caution.

Unless I know the person personally (eg Richard Wigley Manship) I would always either collect with cash or pay with PayPal as a goods or service. And even arguably you should never leave yourself in that position anyway.


You should ALWAYS pay using PayPal in the normal manner. You save 3 quid but risk losing £100..
