RNS510 Sat nav GPS question
« on: September 18, 2014, 10:55:25 am »
Hi guys... I successfully installed my RNS510 this morning and am chuffed with it all. Did the changes to the ipod cable in order to get around the muffled sound too! Glad I knew of that before putting all the trim back on... Pain in the ass that was prying those panels off without breaking anything!

Anyway I tried the maps function and when parked up it displayed correctly... But then I started to drive off and it took ages to update on the screen and the pointer was heading off down wrong roads..... about a mile or two up the road it seemed to catch up (it kinda flew as the crow flys to the correct position)
I then noticed the actual position on the nav looked about 20 metres behind where I actually was. I think if I was relying on it for junctions and roads it would have been confusing.
It said it was using 6/8 satellites..

is this normal?

cheers

where is your gps antenna located?

Mine did this as well and was a PITA. i tried loads of different antenna's and still same problem. I then moved my antenna at the most highest place possible behind the RNS 510 and that sorted it.

hey guys

thanks for the replies

I have mine installed here (found this pic online and saw quite a few guides suggesting this is the best place for it)

can see it tucked at the back on the ledge.

Your antenna position seems good and 6-8 satellites are normally enough for a 3D position lock.

You can try resetting your RNS-510 and then go for a drive. For a good position lock it's better to drive on a highway or another fast road.

To reset press both arrows (<- + ->) and the star button.

Cheers

also check your firmware. I had someone have an antenna problem once who was on an old FW, updated him to 3800 and it solved his issue too.

The software version is 5238

Is that recent enough?

5238 software is fine, although you might have a corrupted version due to other issues. What is the part number on the sticker on the top of the unit?

Version P is what I needed to know. Your unit is fairly well up to date, so no real need to update the firmware. Also, the GPS antenna is in a suitable place (I usually fit them there with no issues). A different GPS antenna might be the answer, or reloading the firmware.

Cheers for the info... Can I just get the firmware online and install via the SD Card?

Is there a way of resetting the compass? I saw that when I searched on google but don't know if its possible

cheers

Firmware needs to be updated via DVD (or cd possibly) , but personally I would try a different antenna for a start. Less to go wrong with a simple wire swap rather than risking an expensive brick if the firmware fails.

Just a thought, did you code the unit into the car as the dead reckoning won't be set up correctly if you didn't.

I got a code with the unit and coded it in after installation if that's what you mean?

Is there an antenna you recommend?

No, I mean did you connect VCDS and tell the car you installed a sat nav unit?
