Mk5 Gti Lowered 10-15mm?

Hi guys!

After fitting my BBS CH to my mk5 gti, and getting my arches rolled on thursday.. im looking at lowering the car slightly! I dont want to do anything mega low as the car still needs to be practical/comfortable! Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for springs for my gti?

Any reason why you're rolling your arches if you're only lowering by that much...?

Anyway, Eibach Pro are one of the more subtle spring kits. Probably a bit more than 15mm though.

Because the bbs are a much wider offset than the 17" standard monzas, so they are scraping on my arches when i go over bumps!

This is how they sit at the moment, and if i go over any larger bumps in my area it scrapes on the arches! So i presumed getting the arches rolled very slightly would stop this? Plus, the wings got replaced under the vw warranty not too long ago so the risk of cracking etc should be minimal if im correct? :)

I would look at another solution before you touch your arches.

What width and offset are the wheels?

What condition are your shocks in?

Is your geometry correctly set up?

The wheels are 235/40 ZR 18, 8.5j offset!

As far as im aware, everything is set up correctly and the shocks are in good condition!

As day to day driving its fine as it is, just makes an awful scraping sound going over bumps or anything like that in the road! I presumed i could get them rolled very slightly just to get rid of this?

With the wrong offset, this could cause problems. And your offset is....?

(Check on the back of the wheels, it should say ET45 or ETsomething).

They don't look too poked, so if it was me I'd drop to 215 or 225, and consider a good set of coilovers that can control the damper compression better. Standard shocks of a certain age won't help.

And I'd do that long before I considered rolling the arches.

They're ET 45 mate, no they're not that poked thats the thing... but they poke just enough for it to scrub on something!

I mean i bought these with the tyres on because the tures were practically brand new, dont fancy buying brand new tyres just yet :'(

Problem is your tyres they are far too big IMO iv got 18x8.5et48 with a 225/40/18 (tiniest bit of stretch) and they fit perfectly (tuck 3mm more than yours)

My brother ran them on his car with 40ish mm drop and never rubbed with standard arches

If you don't want to change the tyres then you'll have to roll your arches and risk damaging them

Personally I'd change the tyres as they look massive anyway

You could also get some super pro ball joints and add a little bit of negative camber up front to aid with clearance

ET45 was just a guess/suggestion, but if that's the case...

You will save money in the long run with narrower tyres. Even going as low as 215 40 won't be any sort of stretch to cause an issue.

And remember, that 40 is a percentage of the width, so 40% of 235mm is marginally increasing the diameter of the tyre as a whole, as well as the extra width, making it all a bit of an ugly fit by the sound of it.

For what it would cost to get your arches rolled properly, you're already talking hundreds. Don't get half a job done on your arches. Plenty of people claim to be able to do it properly, but not many do. Pay cheap and say hello to corrosion in time.

Get a new set of tyres. And seriously consider a set of coilovers if you want to run your tyres close to your arches.

To answer your original question, I believe VW Racing springs are 20mm.
