Oil on top of the pistons could be leaking valve stem oil seals.
When the engine is shut-off the oil in the head can leak down the valve stems and would sit on the pistons of the cylinders where the valves are open
That would produce some smoke on start up but burn off quickly. I doubt it was cause your intermittent miss fire though.

Hello new member here ive just bought a mk5 Gti Golf 3 door and ive been searching through your site and could not find any definitive answers or updates to how everyone go on with quietening down there mk5 Gti. (mostly found old posts from 2012 lol)

You sir are a ledgend I was worried all night I had terminal door lol issues after replacing my window regulator but in fact I had done the same thing and pulled the wire for the door too far adjusted it back to half way and door opens fine.

I bought these off Lockwood they're also on eBay for my import. If you look after 50 mph the increments change. So for some reason on import cars the Speedo doesn't go up in a linear fashion.

My bolt rounded too The other way to deal with this is time up the engine, remove the cambelt and then loosen the cam carrier so the camshaft can be moved. This'll release the chain.

Sorry for resurrecting an old post but I have been chasing the P0087 code for a while now and pulled the HPFP and measured the lobes vs the base circle and am getting a lift of 4.6, 4.6 and 4.8 that is wore but not nearly what I have seen in other posts here. I'm sure many have had this problem but can someone help me identify my ED30? I've contacted multiple VW dealers in my country (RO) as well as the dealer from which my car was bought (in CZ) but none have been able to provide a number. My car doesnt have the placque.
