Howdy chaps,
Been browsing through the site awhile but never posted an official RR so I thought I’d do a quick write up on my MK5 Golf GTI. I have had the car a year now and still loving it, have a build thread on another site so I’ll rob all of the stuff off it an post it here below;
So after a couple of months of being on the hunt... I have finally found the GTI I’ve been looking for and I absolutely LOVE it! Within less than 18 hours of the add going live I had it sitting in my driveway as I wasn’t taking the chance of the car going to someone else.
Sold the Cupra R a couple of months ago and have been on the scout for a specifically spec’d GTI for quite a while and I wasn’t settling for anything less than the spec I wanted so when this bad boy came up I snapped at the chance to take it. Although I did love my LCR (and still really miss it!) I wanted something a bit more comfortable, fast and practical and the GTI ticked all the boxes.
Been driving a MKV TDI for the last couple of weeks and got so bored of it so I couldn’t wait to get my new one and all that patience paid off. Although it is great getting 2 weeks out of a full tank so I’ll miss that side of the diesel but just slow as hell!
The previous owner had purchased it from the UK in 2008 and has had it ever since. The car came with a full documented service history, fresh rubber, long NCT & Tax so it meant I didn’t have to shell out any more money after which is always a plus. The car also came with a full tank, happy days! Description: Description:

The car came with every factory extra apart from a sunroof and the Recaro bucket seats. So enough of the boring stuff, here are some pictures;
I’m chuffed to bits with the car as there were 5 people behind me trying to buy it so lucky I was first in. Car is extremely smooth and the gearbox is perfect. Bodywork is in great condition, few minor scratches and small car park dents but these will be taken out over time. Looking forward to the weekend to give it a good bath as its filthy dirty at the minute.
No massive plans for the car just yet, the alloys aren’t in the greatest condition so they will need a refurb soon enough. That’ll be done in a couple of weeks. Then I’d probably be looking to put a Milltek exhaust and a stage 1 remap soon to bring it up to a healthy 250bhp+. Then if I feel like I need more power I’ll get it stage 2 ready as I never got to do it with the Cupra R.
Have decided on a few things that I want to do to the car recently as I’ve been trawling through the internet looking for fresh ideas and looking to do something a little different so the car can stand out from the rest. The car suffers from some age related marks so I want to get some bits re-sprayed and then a full detail.
I gave the car a well deserved wash the day after I bought it.
First big mod was a set of R32/ED30 rear lights, brilliant Oem upgrade. I had a very good idea from the start what modifications I wanted to put on the car, a lot of OEM stuff from the likes of an R32, ED30 & and S3. Bought these off a fellow member, were in perfect condition and suited the black extremely well!
Next Oem upgrades were a set of S3 8P 345mm front brakes and a Forge Twintake. Picked these up for a steal from a fellow member so couldn't say no. There was still plenty of meat left on the pads and discs so didn’t have to fork out on replacements. One of the best upgrades I’ve put on the car, the difference between these and the standard 312mm is night and day!
The Twintake was for a KO4 turbo so I contacted forge to get a silicone bung to blank it off. Sent it the following week and fitted fine, meant no air was escaping and it was working perfect.
Changed the look and sound of the car completely! Sounded like Darth Vader with a cold hahaha! Just need an engine cover to finish it off as it looks awful without one.
Next upgrade was a set of 20mm spacers for the rear, gives the car a good stance and look of the rear.
Next I sprayed the front badge matte black, looked really well but the paint kept peeling off due to the poor primer so eventually took the paint off and kept it chrome.
Picked up a load of little bits which transformed the interior of the car;
First thing was a set of Carbon DSG extension paddles from Mandy – Epic little extra, give more a comfortable and controlled gear change in sport.
LED Sidelights (8SMD)
LED Rear Number Plate lights (24SMD Kit)
H7 Yellow 'JDM' effect high beams Bulbs
MK6 interior switches
Next I moved into the suspension and braking. Got the S3 brakes powder coated Lambo yellow, came out just perfect, they fit real snug behind the alloy and make a huge difference to braking! Went for Yellow to make the brakes stand out a bit more, much prefer to the normal red brakes found on every GTI.
I picked up some Apex RDX coilovers for at a good price new, was going to buy a set of AP ones but went with these because of the price. Had to wait a few weeks before I could get everything fitted as I had to try and re-coup some funds after splashing out on a lot of parts.
So I left the car in to get all the parts fitted when I got a phone call from the garage, he was going to make a start on the coilovers he'd noticed there was few things that needed to be done soon and was better off getting it all done now while the parts were out. First was the outer CV joint which was on its way out. Next was 2 front wishbone bushes which were looking worse for wear and also the front subframe bolts and spacers as they were a bit loose.
The coilovers were then put on with the rest of the supporting mods and it's completely transformed the steering and handling! The ride is so much better. I will have to do a couple of miles to break in the suspension but it seems amazing so far! I didn't want to go crazy low so it's just sitting at a perfect height which doesn't sacrifice the comfort.
Next was the diverter valve which was completely f****d! I always knew I was down on power but the lads noticed there was a big drop once they took it for a spin. They changed and now it seems to pull so much better and harder through all the gears!
I also got the DSG gearbox serviced as I wasn't too sure when it was done last and the gearbox was feeling a bit clunky!! Feels so much more smoother now and pulls through the gears without any hesitation.
Wasn't too sure when the Cam follower was changed last so thought I might as well get that changed while everything else was being done.
Last thing was the S3 brakes. They are unbelievable!! Compared to the standard 312mm brakes they don't even come close to them and they look uber cool sitting behind the wheel! The yellow finish proper sets them off too.
Here's a list of what was done;
- Fuchs Titan GT1 5W30 Oil Service,
- Oil Filter,
- DSG Gearbox Oil Service,
- DSG Oil Filter,
- Fuel Filter,
- New Diverter Valve,
- New Cam Follower,
- Outer CV Joint Boot Kit,
- Front & Rear Wishbone Bushes,
- Front Left Bottom Balljoint,
- New Ferodo Dot4 Brake Fluid,
- Front Subframe Bolt & Spacer,
- Front S3 8P 365mm Brake Fitting,
- Apex RDX Coilover Fitting,
Here's a couple of sneaky pics after I got it back and gave it as good wash;
It was a completely different car after all the mods had been put on it, was absolutely in love with it. The power delivery, the handling, the gear shifting. Everything about the car had been transformed.
Over & Out.
