Should I get my clutch replaced now?
« on: December 18, 2009, 11:25:26 am »
Just had a quote to have my clutch changed for £446.  It has started slipping under hard acceleration in 4th gear and above at 3k. Is it likely to get worse quickly and damage the flywheel or can I keep going on it for a couple of months until my Christmas bonus comes?

Not the greatest Christmas present:(

Anyone else had any issues with standard gti's at stage 1 remap. Has it gone at 40k because I've done 4 years of town driving or is it more than likely the standard clutch can't cope with the torque of a tuned gti? Remap has been on for 10 months and 6k

cheers guys

Ryan

if its just a map on a normal gti not ed30 it should not have gone unless its been used hard and been ragged on the clutch lots  :driver: mine was getting slippy around 20k but that was on a mapped ed30. i think i have stock vw clutch plate ie the disc in the grg that u could have cheap if you need it

Mods yes but way too many to stick in this little box

depends how you treat it, but yes if its slipping there potential for it to damage your DMF.
consider your options and talk to VWR

as Matt says you shouldnt really have had an issue with a std mapped GTI unless its been treated badly so I'm surprised.
maybe you also have a small shaft oil leak which has precipitated the issue ?

fitting std kit should do you fine  :happy2: , but consider 'upgrades' as well

FWIW my ed30 is now over 30k on its original clutch (>20k of which has been on APR stg1), its never felt right but it still holds!

I've owned it since it was 3 months old and I certainly haven't abused it. Maybe I'm just unlucky but as I said above I do loads of short journeys in traffic which can't help. I suppose I'm just worried I'll spend the Money and it will go again in 12 months? I'm unlikely to keep it more than another 12 months and I don't fancy a heavier perfomance clutch.  I was thinking an s3 and remapping it but searching around, it seems the s3 boys get through standard clutches in less than 10k

Matt, my quote is with a clutch kit and bearing. How much of the clutch kit is the plate?? Also what condition is it in?

Cheers mate,

Ryan

what year is your car?

my 06 one did it as soon as i had it remapped with Revo S1. Promptly booked it in and got a Sachs heavy duty replacement put in.

much better now and takes much more abuse.

wouldn't say the OEM one was "abused" but it was prolly a LUK version and they're known to be much weaker than Sachs on the OEM clutches.

I would get it changed as soon as you can.

Are you replacing with OEM or a heavy duty version?

It's a 2005. I'm going standard as the is another £300 more for a performance clutch.

Are you saying the oem early clutches were weaker than the oem I will replace it with now?

Cheers

well i've heard that they've stopped using LUK as a supplier now and use Sachs (along with someone else i'd presume)

so yeah you could get lucky and the OEM replacement will be ok.

But beware that the Mk6 GTI has already shown to have weak clutches it seems (VWR had probs with a standard car just having fun at Rockingham i believe, not sure if it was remapped tho) so not sure what VW are using these days.

Only safe bet is to use a stronger aftermarket type, which will hold more torque (rated to over 400+lbft i think) and will cater for more mods should u decide on that route.

All I can tell you for defo is the Sachs Performance one will have no probs, about from a wee bit of judder in 1st gear and is not as light as an OEM clutch.

Right, it's booked in for the 4th of Jan but I've been told to prepare for the fact it will need a new dm flywheel at around £5-600. missus is livid, it has to go. Anyone else just had a clutch changed and the flywheel hasn't fallen to pieces?

I had my clutch changed at about 18k miles and my DMF was fine, and its been in the car since and its been fine and my car has just done 22k miles, and most of them have been at a tuned state

The guy said he'd done a Jetta and a very low mileage s3 this week and they both needed it replacing. It's a very reputable Vw/Audi specialist as top cat and Tony danza will confirm. I'm not gonna use it for the next couple of weeks and hope it's okay once looked at.  Can't help think what £1k I don't have would buy me :(

I've just emailed vwr and midland Vw to asked their advise, will keep you posted on what they say. If I get it done at vwr will I get their gti monster as a courtesy car?

Midland Vw have been very quick to reply. £400 Inc vat for standard clutch and £795 for saschs updated clutch. Said standard will be fine if I'm not planning on other mods and said it's much nicer to use.  Also not too concerned about flywheel, said he doesn't see why there would be an issue at this stage. Fingers crossed, now booked for dec 29th.

Can you get a clutch replaced under warranty if the car is still less than 3 years old 9I have the maintenance package)?
I have a stage1 Ed30 and I think my clutch slips sometimes.....
