Quick update.

I got around to doing an oil change with new filter and sump plug as I’d covered around 6000 miles since the last.

I also finally got the number plate LEDs sorted,

My rear badge did have aluminium affect vinyl inserts but with the new bumper there was too much silver so I took them off and added carbon effect ones instead for a bit of contrast.

Finally, I removed the number plate surround, I think the number plate looks cleaner and sits better without it, so if anyone wants the pair let me know as you can have them.

Still umming and arring about whether to do a wiper delete…. go for style over function?

Re: Mark O’T Reflex Silver MK5 GTI (Grille colour coding)
« Reply #31 on: May 02, 2016, 08:31:11 pm »
I’ve ordered a number plate bracket off a guy on the GTI Facebook group to relocate my number plate so I can run a smooth grille.

In anticipation I ordered a new black smoothed grill from Ebay and also decided to try and smooth and colour code the one I have so I have 2 options.

I’ve done DIY painting jobs before which I’ve always been disappointed with as I tended to rush them, so this time I took my time, which involved a lot of sanding and waiting!

Sanded and holes filled

4x coats of primer, flashed for about 20mins between each

3x coats of reflex silver

4x clear coats and finished (for now)

I’m really happy with the outcome, tiny bit of overspray but going to leave it 2 weeks to cure and then rub the whole grille with a rubbing compound to try and get everything even.

1500 wet and dry paper and then a good polish should see you right. keep it room temp amd you can do it in the next two days lol but your choice.

I was thinking of doing that but read it can go bad easily, I don't want to ruin all the hard work, do you not have to compound after the final sand or is polish enough?

You should really use 1200 1500 then 200 grit paper and the a polish and that will be fine as ive done similar and it works but be gentle when sanding and don't force the paint drips off.

Mini update. I haven’t fitted the Grille I painted yet as I still haven’t given it a wet sand polish.

The car had its MOT yesterday at Streetwise in Bristol and passed with no advisories. They’re a VW specialist and nice people so I will be using them again in the future.

I’ve been having no luck with Carista and ebay OBD2 adapters, I’ve ordered 3 different ones which are all “defective”, it’s getting on my tets.

Fitted a number plate bracket from a guy on the Facebook group with my pressed square plate and found a din that fits the gaping hole in my arms rest, it’s such as small thing but really satisfying to finally fill the hole.

The car got a quick clean and I took a couple of photos but my phone takes potato quality images, I really need to get a proper camera.

Got a good photo of my Bettle.

This weekend the car got a full clean inside and out, I need to get my hands on a good snow foam lance for my Kercher pressure washer.

Bought and fitted some real carbon skinned wing mirror covers which a friend sorted me out at a reasonable price, they are a perfect fit and look awesome. Some genuine carbon rear badge inserts arrived from the US to replace the vinyl ones, the inserts are much nicer.

Looks great, nice touches  :happy2:

Been thinking about the carbon mirror caps for mine too.

Chris
It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

Great, thanks for the offer!  :drinking:

I've got to sort a few bits on the car mechanically first but when I have some spare to put towards more styling parts then I'll get in touch.  :happy2:

It was worth waiting for Yodel all afternoon for the r32 rear lights I bought on ebay, got onto fitting them straight away. Makes me think, why did it take me so long to get rid of the standard ones  :jumpmove: I gave them a once over with a Meguires cutting compound to remove some scuffs.

Removed my old tatty Polo aerial and replaced with a Sharan aerial also off ebay. I expected a loss of signal quality, but it's actually improved...

Installed interior LEDs I've had for ages but couldnt be bothered to fit.

Thanks mate.

The parking sensors work well. They were on when I bought the car although I think they are aftermarket.
