supply and fitting new car stereo on MK5 Golf
« on: August 19, 2015, 03:09:53 pm »
I would like to upgrade my RCD300 to a newer system (either the RCD510 or a RNS system). Can anybody advise me on the best place to start on finding a system, then fitting it?

Many Thanks

eBay is a good place lots of units for sale on there... Need to be careful what your buying though...

Or you could go to a company that does retrofits but it's going to be a more costlier option...

You may also have to factor in the price of upgrading your CANBUS module depending on the year of your car (Flat battery if you don't!)...

Also a DAB aerial if the unit needs it...

Or you could go down the route of a Kenwood DNX521/525 OEM looking and just a straight swap over, no need to upgrade CANBUS either

Thanks! I have sat on ebay and also checked gumtree daily to find a decent RNS510 and and seeing roughly £350+ for the unit. But am confused by software version, item a,b,c - h etc etc

Which rns510 will fit my MK5 2005/55 plate golf without canbus upgrade/battery drain? Or am i better off getting a canbus upgrade anyways? And after getting canbus upgraded can i choose any system?

If yours is a 05/55 then it definitely will need upgrading...

Yes if it's done then you can fit all the latest VW headunits. The newer RNS510's have LED screen also some have DAB...

Again ask Ed if he's got any for sale if not what you need to look out for in model types, specification and firmware etc.

Q or P versions are almost identical. I think the only real difference might be the P version comes from factory with firmware 5238 and the Q version with another a bit older firmware.

I'd buy the cheapest and in better condition and then upgrade it to 5274 modified version.
