OUTER CV BOOT PASSENGER SIDE DSG HELP CLIP?

Hello i have searched quite abit but could do with more information..

i have noticed my outer cv boot is leaking grease, i have brought a kit from tps and want to tackle it asap, ive never done anything with cv boots done plenty of other jobs around the car , my car is a dsg and people mention there is a special clip holding it into the gearbox, is this true how do i remove it?

can i leave it in place and remove just the cv joint if so whats best way i hear it needs to be in a vice and smashing a clip off ?

Don't believe the dsg has a special clip, I remember reading it somewhere but not sure what they on about! A vice isn't needed just a swift precise strike on the cv should free it.

Have done this job myself, have previous experience for a s3.. I couldn't find a guide either although think I used a passat one in the end for rough guide. I chose to remove the entire shaft for ease of installing new kit but some people choose to leave on the car.. Roughly what I did:

Loosen hub nut (32mm iirc)

Jack car and remove wheel

Remove 6 bolts from gearbox (6 x ??mm spline tool, leave in gear to prevent shaft rotating)

Remove hub nut

Then either remove ball joint upper nut or the three lower. I chose the three lower as meant I didn't have to separate the ball joint from the hub. Then the hub and suspension strut are free for the lower wishbone and allow movement to free the shaft

Once out cut off old boot clean away majority of the grease, then with a punch or accurate hammer hit belt off the CV joint which is only being held on by a clip (new one supplied in kit although your unlikely to damage the old one)

Fit new kit and refit shaft, car tracking would need doing as geometry would be affected after removing the ball joint from wishbone.

Just a rough idea of the process I did, not really a guide but maybe of a little guidance / help  :happy2:

There is no clip on the dsg. Like v4rley said remove the 3 lower nuts from the ball joint this saves you having to split it.

I really struggled getting the joint off the drive shaft. In the end i used my crappy electric impact wrench, the bolt i removed and a small socket to drive the joint off. This technique works really well. The circlip was literally ripped in half explaining why i could not bash it off.

This guy makes it look easy

I just changed the r/h side boot. Somebody said it earlier I think but I'll say it again. Undo the 3 lower ball joint nuts and tie the strut back out of the way. Leave the driveshaft in with the opposite wheel on the ground. Refit the big axle bolt into the CV joint and tighten it all the way while holding the CV joint nice and straight until it contacts the driveshaft. There was about 3/4" of bolt remaining and you'll know if you get it right as the CV will no longer wobble. Then keep cranking and the CV clip will let go. It takes quite a bit of force and the CV actually cut a spline in my clip but no damage to either axle or CV. Then I slide hammered it off the rest of the way as the bolt bottoms out. Hope this helps. I tried for ages with a proper 2lb slide hammer with cv attachment and had no luck. When you get the cv apart you can tell VW never meant these to be removeable as there is no lead in on the spline For removal.
