Coil pack replaced

Driving home last Thursday, went to accelerate and boom, judders and vibrations and one poorly sounding GTI with engine warning light flashing away.

Came straight on here and read up, sounded like a coil pack failure. Had a busy weekend planned and having read about the VW re-call I realised it wasn't going to help me get back on the road asap. So a quick trip to Euro car parts in the furby and I have a new coil pack... I don't claim to have any mechanic skills but through brute force and ignorance managed to swap the failed one (it had to be the 4th one that had failed!) Problem solved!

It's probably a very simple job for all you experienced mechanics, but I'm chuffed anyway!  :smiley:

Big thanks to everyone who has ever posted about coil packs, I've probably read every post going!

Was it hard to replace? Same things happened on my gti (intermittently) and my cylinder 2 coil pack probably needs changing but havnt got round to doing it yet!

Remove airbox and they are right in your face at the top of the engine just unplug the coil and pull it out. Be nice if all jobs were this easy. Hardest part is removing that awful airbox  :fighting:  :fighting:

A couple of cable ties come in handy for pulling them out.

Good effort @kris I never did anything to my cars until my GTI. Coil pack was the first thing l replaced. Its all about confidence, Im not a 'handy' guy at all, but this forum with the How to Guides and the support and encouragement from others on here have really helped me be much more confident when working on my car.

Whats the worst that can happen??  :signLOL:

This! I wish I knew this before starting, I found them a right pain to remove by hand.

Took me about 2 hours, bearing in mind I've never even removed the engine cover before and had to swap all 4 packs to find the failed one. The cable tie trick will probably save you over a hour!
