Hello mate, had a few issues when I got my GTi one of which was an intermittent rattle and diesel type clatter at idle, fears were backed up when I got the dreaded low oil pressure warning. Had everything replaced and the car was spot on until I went to pick it up and a very similar rattle came back, after a few days it turned out to be an issue with the variable valve timing. Got the car back and it was running better than it ever had, any flat spots were gone etc. The rattle is now back intermittently when the engine is warm and only at idle or very low engine speeds, a quick blip over 3500rpm seems to stop it (Im guessing something that is getting stuck in the vvt system becomes unstuck) may not be your issue but worth a look. The noise seems to come from the top of the engne, once your on the move it doesnt affect the car at all, but between 3k and 4k there is a noticable flat spot again.

Thanks Andrew

My car is going to the garage tomorrow so hopefully I will have a better idea of what's causing the rattle.

All sorted now at Midland VW. I had the timing chain and tensioner fitted and its now as it should be. Well pleased.

Does the adjuster need to come off even if it doesn't need replacing? Like to get to the tensioner and chain?

Does anyone actually know why the rattle only becomes audible once warm?

I guess because the viscosity of the oil gets lower as the engine heats.

Is the diesel noise actually an issue other than sounding crap? Because my GTI is super loud and has been for some time but if it's just a noise, I can live with it.

I have spoke to a vw master tech and he says that he has.never had a problem with the cam chain snapping but ive also heard that it can happen. Im just going to biy parts slwoly and when I have enough money get the labour done
Probably because the camfollower fails before the chain as i think they don't change them.

My car had always been serviced by VW i suspect if i had them service my car it would have eaten the cam follower by now.
