Mk5 Timing Chain Rattle

Hi

I've got the common diesel noise at idle, when warm on a 57 plate GTi. I've read on here about in addition to the chain and tensioner, people are also changing the camshaft adjuster. VW do a repair kit for the 05/06 cars but not for my later car. Does anybody know if the later cars only require the chain and tensioner changing?

I have read that some people have changed the chain and tensioner but still had the noise. Cant recall a member on here changing the chain and tensioner and still having the noise.

I changed everything. A few members have also gone down this route as they did not want to do the job again.

What year is your car ? As mine is a 57 plate with bwa engine code you can't seem to buy the adjuster.

Mines an AXX the adjustor is the same.
Think this is everything you will need.

Oh hello there!
Long time lurker here, finally decided to create my own account, yay!

I have owned a 2005 AXX gti for a few months now, and with 170000km on the clock the diesel-idle was pretty much a given.
At first I didn't care about it too much but it started to develop a noticeable rattle when revving a bit, and the diesel sound started to rival most tractors so I decided to finally do something about it. I took a gamble and only got the cam chain and tensioner (and all the seals) replaced. The garage had to drill out the adjuster bolt but thankfully nothing of value was lost.

Just picked it up this morning and all i can say is wow... Sounds like somebody changed a totally different engine to my car. Nice and quiet, pretty much like any other petrol engine save for a bit of clicking sounds from the injectors and fuel pump.

As to your question of whether to get the expensive cam adjustor replaced or not, unfortunately there is no definitive answer. Based on what I've read here and what I've heard elsewhere (and my recent experience of course), the odds are quite good going without the adjuster.

Good to know even professionals have to drill out the adjustor bolt. I don't know if i would recommend reusing the adjustor after drilling the bolt out, there are holes where the bolts sits these were full of metal shavings when i got mine off.

I was a bit concerned about the adjuster as well after hearing they had to drill the bolt out (yep, have read your story  ), so I asked if the thing was still 100% good to go. They showed me the bolt and it was still intact (except for the hole in the middle of course!)
They also gave a 2-year warranty for the entire service, so I'm not too worried. Also I do know the guys quite well so I don't think they would rip me off if some major disaster happens.

I had my timing chain done recently at a VW Beadles in my 08 TSi gt - just to be safe then sorry after buying it @ 60k miles - the engineers called me in on the day to show me nothing was wrong with the original part and tensioners but we went ahead with the change anyway, the only rattle I have now is from my DMF in idle - which is fine by me!

Where did you have it done mate?

I've recently changed my oil for the first time since buying the car and went for Castrol Edge 5w 40 and it has quietened the engine down a fair bit and bizarrely seems to have calmed the slight idle misfire down a little.

You can buy just the adjustor the part number is 06F109088J who ever told you that you need the housing as well is talking

My local dealer told me the same. I have him art number for adjuster and it referred him to different diagram and say you require the housing too  although was about £480 inc

Yep the adjustor should be the same, I wouldn't bother changing it just the chain and tensioner seems to solve the problem.
