Gunk on oil filler cap

hadn't topped the oil up for 2-3 wks and when I did on the weekend had a real shock when the inside of the cap was covered in loads of white gunk.
Panicked and thought oh no the head gasket was on the way out but dipstick is clean.
Is this a common thing with the GTIs this time of year? There was really quite a lot of the stuff so guess it means checking/cleaning more often...

Sometimes you can get a small amount when doing short runs . I think you get condensation in the engine and it mixes with the oil but don't think there should be that much! It could be an oil cooler fault , I had that problem on my a3 fsi a year ago it was relatively cheap enough to replace ! Head gaskets aren't prone to go on the tfsi engines as far as I know

Lots of short journeys will cause this. As neiller said, it's condensation build up. I get the same as i only do a 3 mile round trip to work and back each day and the engine never gets warm. Giving it a good ol' Italian Tune up once or twice a week cures it.

Yes mainly short run use, 6 miles to work.
I'll take some pics next time round but there was a lot of the stuff it had even dropped down off the cap.

Sounds like it may be too much check your coolant level / coolant for signs of oil in it

I do about 4-6 thousand miles a month and I get it. Ive not had any engine heating issues. Or any issues at all for that matter.

It's 100% normal for the time of year with the cold, damp air. Unless you have huge amounts of a thick 'mayo-like' substance under the cap, and all the way down the filler neck, I wouldn't worry.

Check your coolant is still nice and pink/red too, and not a horrid thick creamy like substance

Its been cover thousands of times - cold weather + short journeys = small amount of mayo on the filler cap. Take it for a long hard drive one a week to burn off the condensation.

Pretty much spot on description that.
Coolant is fine though so will pay more attention in the winter when not having done any longer runs in the car.

Any car I get I always use a marker and make a line on the coolant expansion tank so you can be sure your losing coolant whether it be a leak or head gasket etc. I get plenty of mayo on the filler as the car takes so long to warm up and I do 5 mile commutes

It's when there is way too much on the dipstick is when you need to worry pal.

my tt did it a lot as I used her for short journeys and once a month to Birmingham which is when I gave her some beans  so I wouldn't worry too much about it but do keep an eye on things that's all. especially the oil as these stupid cars drink way too much oil than an Audi for sure.
