Crazy idle and part throtte backfire smell of fuel. No dash lights
« on: September 01, 2015, 05:16:21 pm »
Hey!

As i was driving the other day i noticed the car would pop and bang when i lifted off the throttle. I thought nothing of it untill i pulled up at work. Idle was crazy, engine shaking like mad. Hmm. Started the car 8 hours later, same thing. Then as i drove home, it started to loose power. No lights on dash. Changed coils and plugs. Car still idles like its on 2, pops and bangs on the over run but i have power again? Dont think its a boost leak, cause the car pulls fine above 3000rpms. Could it be the pcv? Ive read all the threads amd the symptoms seem different? Also when on constant part throttle the car speeds up and slows down. Like wee surges? Anyone?

Just took the car out there and its un driveable. Engine rocks about really bad, and now the revs sometimes stick? Backfires alot when off throttle. Also noticed the car smells really badly of fuel and it heats up rapid. Cars holding coolant and oil. Any ideas?

I'd start by checking the PCV I've had similar symptoms to the ones you describe when the PCV was faulty on my last gti.
Mine sounded like the engine was on its last legs but after fitting a new PCV it was like a different car.

If it's not that then try and get some with vagcom to scan and see if anything comes up as it won't always throw a light on for everything.

I wouldn't expect it to be misfiring or running on 2 cylinders as that would put the engine check light on NORMALLY but maybe worth a look at spark plugs, coils or injectors being at fault.

I'm pretty sure a nackered lambda sensor would put the engine light on too but I can't say for sure but when they go they normally cause overfueling but not excessive.

Get a video uploaded to. Helps a lot when trying to diagnose something's
