Want two new tyres but which to get Michelin pilot sport or Michelin pilot sport 3 and what's the difference between the two ?
Pilot Sport (1st gen) - quite old tyre with a "V" groove pattern, but not bad at all - if still available
Pilot Sport PS2 (2nd gen) - still available, great steering feel and dry grip (sometimes sold just as "Pilot Sport")
Pilot Sport PS3 (3rd gen) - good overall performing, improved wet grip, but slightly worse steering feel
Pilot SuperSport PSS - the "real" successor of the PS2, even better dry grip and steering feel than PS2
I'd say the PS3 would be more like the successor of the Pilot Exalto (PE2), so a
tad less sporty compared to the former top-of the-range PS2. Indeed the PS3
has been the successor of both the PS2 and the PE2. That's why it has become
less sharp as the PS2.
Some PS2 afficionados disliked the PS3, and probably that has been one major
reason why Michelin launched the PSS two years later. The PSS is the best dry
performing and still daily-driving capable summer tyre currently available.
If your tyre size is 225/40 R18 or 235/35 R19 I'd recommend trying the PSS.
You'll enjoy it. The PS3 is a decent tyre too though (and availabe in 17" and
even 16" sizes).
