Inside of alloys
« on: September 15, 2015, 02:27:21 pm »
The inside of my Alloys are filthy, I mean black like they have never been cleaned! I have owned the car since March and was approved used, car is immaculate as I'm a little ocd hence the alloys bugging me, they are standard 17".
What do you guys suggest, Iron x or other and would a brush to agitate be sufficient or something stronger such as a mild wire wool?

Cheers

If they've never been cleaned, I'd suggest going at them first with brick acid. It's like wonder wheels on steroids. It's not something you should use often but to clean wheels as filthy as yours sounds, its OK for very occasional use.

The brick acid should bring off most of the brake dust. I'd use a stiff detailing brush to agitate itmin stubborn areas and corners. Wear a pair of gloves. That stuff really, really hurts ifnit gets in a cut or graze.

Rinse very well. Repeat if required. Then the Tar remover and Iron x for anything that's left. Then protect very well. I use Poorboys wheel sealant. 3 or 4 coats provides an excellent protective layer. Autoglym SRP and then EGP is also recommended. You can get some properly expensive stuff from the likes of G-tecnic if you are feeling flush...

A set of wheel woolies is essential for regular maintenance unless you wanna take your wheels off every time you wash the car.....

Thank you for the advice, ended up going at them with iron x. It cleaned them very well but has shown up a heavy amount of corrosion blistering and the rest of the inner wheel looks like they have never been painted in silver! Surprising really as the outside faces look brand new, no doubt cleaned over by the vw dealer before purchase.
Anyway think its time for some BBS CH 18"s

Cheers
