Tyre wear on GTD
« on: September 09, 2015, 10:15:32 pm »
Hi folks, I bought my GTD new in March last year and it has now covered about 8k, about 99% of it by my wife who doesn't drive the car hard at all. Had a check of the tyres tonight and the 2 fronts will need changed in the next few weeks!  :surprised:

My transit custom has just clocked 36k and has more tread on the front!

Originally the car came with contisport 2 which I believe are discontinued? I spoke to my local VW dealer and they recommend the contisport 5. I like the fact that all my tyres are by the same manufacturer but am not overly impressed by the wear rate.

Should I just stick another couple of contisports on or is there a better alternative?

Oponeo is the cheapest I have found at £84 per tyre for a contisport 5. My local VW garage  want £140 per tyre!  :signLOL:

Wear sounds excessive to me.
Try tyre leader for the best prices.

I thought it was excessive too, although my brother had a mk5 GTI diesel and that also went through tyres for fun. I suppose that the fact his missus was a racing driver didn't help..... :stupid:

On Tyreleader there are 6 different variations of contisport 5 225/40/18 92y. Which is the correct for my golf? AO-Audi and MO-Mercedes etc...... Prices range from £80 to £104!

Rich, I will get them aligned when I get the tyres changed. May even Call VW today and query the excessive wear.  :happy2:

Not that this will help but my local VW sales person went through the front tyres of his first MK7 in 3500miles. He does drive like a clown though!

I'm sure my mk7 GTD came with bridgstones from factory. Looked Tues night, 14000 miles and I would say another 1000miles left in them.

That's mental! My missus drives like miss daisy, at least that's what she tells me!

Mine is Sept'14 64plate. I have just bought Conti contact 5's for my s3 8p need to see how they last on that at stage4.

Cheers, Stevie.

Conti Sports are quite a soft and sticky compound for grip, and wear accordingly. Where as Bridgestones are made of coal and churches, and that's why they do starship mileage and try and kill you in the wet.

Just pick somewhere on the scale, you can't have everything!
Sideways yo!

Have they work evenly? And go with michelins if you want tyres to last longer :) front wheel drive diesels with lots of torque do chew through tyres though

Passenger side is worse which is understandable given the amount of roundabouts where I live. I called VW yesterday and they say they use 3 different tyre manufacturers to keep the prices competitive, pot luck what your car comes with I guess.

I had michelins on my mk5 GTI and they were excellent Mitch, I was actually thinking about buying the PS3's in the for sale section before they sold.

That does sound like excessive wear. Got mine in June and its just coming up to 7500 miles, tyres still looking pretty fresh.
