HELP!! Free play in steering wheel
« on: September 13, 2015, 02:58:38 pm »
Hi,

Anyone have any thoughts on what could be causing this?

In Brief
A delivery van reversed into my car at work. (Mk6 Golf R)
The main impact was at the front nearside wheel and wing.

The car has been repaired.
Fitted with
New front shock absorber, new top mount, new hub, new wheel.
Car has had 4 wheel alignment and steering angle sensor calibration.

The car steers and drives straight
BUT
When driving there is a definite amount of free play in the steering wheel of around 20-25mm before you feel the steering wheel actually move the front wheels.
Basically you can drive along and move the wheel back and forth as if the steering wheel is loose.

The car is booked back in for the engineer to look at but they are saying the wheel alignment is fine.

Any thoughts or ideas to what may be causing this would be greatly  appreciated.
