This was supposed to be a relaxing holiday
« on: September 17, 2015, 04:36:23 am »
We are currently in Kona on the Big Island, Hawai'i and have been for nearly a week. The weather is DAMN hot and humid to the point where it is nearly impossible to do anything without sweating profusely. I tried the other morning to get for a run but it was 30c and 90% humidity at 7am so got coffee instead.

The weather tends to be hot and sunny with clear blue sky until late afternoon when the rain starts bringing the flash floods. The rain at coast level only lasts for 30 minutes or so but further up the island and on the topical side as much as 2-3cm or rain can fall in just over an hour. When the floods hit us, if you are caught in one it can only be described as terrifying and nearly a brown trouser moment for sure.

To add to the fun we are now on Tsunami alert and have been advised to pack emergency bags should we need to leave when the Tsunami is predicted to hit the south of the island at 2pm GMT (3am HST). So no drinking for me this evening. It doesn't help they have just tested the warning sirens - which incidentally the sound is absolutely harrowing!

On a plus note my rental is 4motion DSG Tiguan.

Wow, that does sound mad.  I take it there's no AC gyms to have a workout in?  I doubt that's high on your agenda now with the threat of a Tsunami!  :surprised:

this is a genuine question

why do you go on holiday but then still go to the gym / out for runs

i understand people may be into their fitness (i'm not) but surely that's a bit cuckoo?  :stupid: :star:

My excuse is. I Hawaii they do not have a low fat option and there portions are stupidly massive, in fact i would say in some respects larger than the mainland. I asked for a low fat coffee and had to explain i didn't want cream or 50/50 but 2% milk. They thought i was delightful!

So the Tsunami lost most of its energy in the pacific and the threat was downgraded about midnight but the shoreline still took a pounding. Our condo is about 150m away from the beach and we could hear the waves pounding the sea defence at 3.30am this morning.

Best is south point at 4-5ft. Our side of the island is pretty flat :(

Hawaii is part of the US, so the dollar USD is the local currency.

Cost of living is pretty expensive as the majority of produce has to be imported from other islands or the mainland. Using a loaf of bread as a unit of measure - about £4!
