Another RNS510 Upgrade Topic!
« on: September 18, 2015, 11:57:51 am »
Hi all, I'm reasonably new here and similarly new to any kind of retrofitting. I recently bought a MK5 07 Golf and am in desperate need of a headunit upgrade (pretty sure it's just a stock RCD300 currently). Naturally I've decided to go for a RNS510, so I've used the search function on here and found out what I can, but I I've decided to create a topic asking some of the more newbie questions due to being unsure!

Firstly I've read alot about Eddie-NL and how helpful he can be. Obviously I can't PM him yet but does anyone know if he could offer the full service for me? I.e the unit itself (subject to availability), canbus upgrade, all aerials and necessary coding? I'd also want an AUX input installed!

If I resort to buying the unit on Ebay what should I look out for? Baring in mind I don't really know what I'm talking about haha. I would like a reasonably new model so from what I can gather, Id want one with the LED screen. Also I'd like Bluetooth and DAB, but are these optional add ons for the unit? If I'd buy one without these features are they easy to add?

Once I buy one on eBay I think I'd definately ask Eddie to fit it for me, as the whole coding and syncing to my highline display is something I wouldn't even dream to understand!

After searching on eBay it's really quite overwhelming looking at the results, so please any help is appreciated, thanks!

I have upgraded my RCD300 to a RNS510, really was quite straightforward

Got mine from Lithuania off eBay - Link shows the seller I used who was very fast sending the unit to me
I decided against DAB due to the patchy reception and issues with replacing the roof mounted ariel along with the added expense.
But did want SSD and LED display

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-RNS-510-Led-Q-Golf-Touran-Passat-Polo-/111769852409?hash=item1a060099f9

You will also need one of these adapters for your current Ariel

For bluetooth hands free phone calls, wireless music streaming and extra menus on the highline display I bought a Fiscon Basic Plus Unit

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiscon-Kufatec-Plus-36496-Volkswagen-VW-Skoda-handsfree-RNS-and-RCD-models-/110704016437?hash=item19c6793c35

Everything was plug and play - didnt require any coding and worked straight out of the box
I dont think you will have any battery drain issues being a 2007 car but I am sure someone will be along and advise on that one

Easily doable at home with basic tools - hardest bit is removing the dash trim, youtube vids show you how  :happy2:

^ Stuf has covered it well, although I cannot recall if my satnav worked as well as it does now its been coded in? Perhaps I'm justifying my VCDS purchase with that?

it seems since I have coded it now I have 10/15 satellites at all times (before was 6-8) and I now get the road names mentioned by the Lady living in my satnav; before it was "turn left" now it is "turn left onto blabla road" which is a nice addition!

Thanks very much for your time.

So am I right in thinking that some units are DAB and some aren't? Or is it just a matter of attaching the DAB aerial to any RNS510 and it will receive DAB stations?

As for the Bluetooth - is it necessary to spend that much to enable a Bluetooth system or can you buy units with Bluetooth functionality already enabled? I think id compromise and go without Bluetooth if I have to spend that much on it!

Thanks for your reply, I feel more confident on the SATNAV side of things now!
