Emissions control warning light
« on: September 08, 2015, 06:17:46 pm »
Hi,
Just joined the forum having bought a Mk5 Golf GTi the last few days from a friendly chap in Edinburgh.
Sods law; as soon as I had filled the tank with £50 of ESSO Premium unleaded the dreaded "Emissions control warning light" came on.
I've had a search through the forums and suspect it might be fumes from overfilling contaminating the carbon canister since the car drives absolutely fine with no loss of power (see previous thread: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,95270.0.html).
Anyhoo, is there anyone in the Glasgow area with VCDS/VAG.com who would be kind enough to run a diagnostic scan for me please.
Could I just buy an OBDII blutooth transmitter with Torque for android to get the correct error codes?
Many Thanks in advance.

Does it have the standard exhaust & cat? If it has a decat or a sports cat, you are likely to get the EML coming on if you don't have a remap or a lamda probe spacer.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
It is completely standard with no mods.
It's a 2006 plate 5 door with only limited service history since it was a previous local authority/police owned car.
Cambelt and water pump changed two years ago.
It drove absolutely fine during my test drive with no warning lights but immediately after i filled the tank the warning light came on.
Possibly got a member on Scottish VW forum with VCDS willing to scan for error codes.

I remember reading a thread once where someone took the canister apart and put a torch to the pellets.

Took a while but i found it. Don't know if this works but thought i would share. I think you may be able to buy replacement pellets also.
