Quick question on Diesel sounding but I've done my research
« on: September 23, 2015, 08:29:36 pm »
I have a mk5 vw golf gti and its ticking witch pointed me towards the cam follower at first so I changed it and it only ticked when warm, so my next thought is the cam chain and tensioner witch I'm willing to pay for to get done but living on a small island I'm limited to where I can take it so been too 3 different places for quotes and one of them have never done the job as they haven't had a mk5 with 87k on the clock but listened to what I said I've researched on and did there own and they are confident it's what I say the cam chain etc, I took it to another place witch originally warned me the tensionor and chain will need to be done soon, now say your gonna need to changed cam inlet as well as the chain etc as they had to do the same before but on an Audi, but what worries me is the main dealer on the island said its either a piston slapping or my bottom ends gone and wouldn't listen to what I had to say and wants me to take it in on Saturday for him to look at after hours.... Witch sort of puzzles me and I'm just wondering what you guys think about my situation?

worth a read

I too was having cam chain rattle on start up sounded like a derv GTI , once warm it got quieter but I still had a noise similar to the tappets rattling
so last week after what seemed like a lifetime wait it went to my mate for a cam chain , variable timing unit and other bits needed to cure this its a revised part so you have to change the whole lot this came in at £670 part alone ,
this was changed cured the start up rattle but the hot running tappet noise was still there my mechanic traced the noise to the bottom left hand rear of the engine he'd already dropped the sump when doing the valve gear
when he looked for the noise he found this in the balance shaft unit

this is the balance shaft unit it also houses the oil pump , its driven by a chain from the front of the crank shaft

the sprocket drive is a damped type and was moving side to side and when removed look like this

the balancer shaft unit has no serviceable parts apart from the oil pump and is sold as a complete unit cost £1200 lucky my mate had a second hand unit that was good and is now on the car running quieter than its ever done

my car is a 55 plate 75k engine with a full service history , I drive it as it should be driven not hammered but not carried around

there are loads of posts on here about engine noise on here hopefully all these are not this , my mechanic is a VAG tech currently working in a local main dealers and he or them have never seen this before but he also added that they don't see many Mk5's in the dealers workshop either

anyone else had this problem with the sprocket drive

Wow I really hope mines not the same, do you have a video of how it was before you fixed it? Cheers for that though, I might show the guy at the garage that listened to me and researched it, that's worried me a bit though, just want it to sound normal and not have to worry about it any longer
