Take it for a test drive and listen for knocks when going over speed bumps or pot holes - possible bushes, drop links (budget £100 - £200) or steering rack (£1k+)
Aircon - make sure its ice cold as it cold be the pump is FUBAR
Service history - No or little service history, unless its a deal of the century. Walk away.
2016 Mk7 Golf GTD - Reflex Silver with stuff.

VCDS Hex+Can - Will code for beer!

From what I know, ensure the DSG box is smooth and quiet with no lurching when going into first.....the mechatronic units are know to go. £700 to fix. Other than that, usual things as others have said. Belt changes, front wings, usual due diligence checks on panel gaps, paint etc to check for any evidence of poorly repaired damage etc. General appearance should suggest how well its been kept. Tread depth and brand of tyre will also be a good indicator.

Gut instinct is a pretty good radar for cars. It's never usually far wrong. My current daily I bought on, amongst other things, a decent gut feel and the evidence it had been cared for. 75kk in 7 and a half years later and all its needed are a rear bearing, a ball joint and a coil pack......

I believe it was dropped to 40k or 4 years at some point. Vw said to keep the belt under warranty it must be done to these times (no surprise). They do fixed pricing at 400 or 480 with the pump fyi. Was cheaper than many specialists quoted. When looking at a Octavia with the same engine the dealer said the same.  Handbook doesn't state.

If it's due, might be worth getting the pump too just in case.

Also check for rust on the front sills by the wheels and front wing joint and behind the rear boot handle.

Sorry I thought I wrote more detail than that! It had more owners than the advert quoted & not quite as good condition as I would like for the price & could not get enough money off to make it how I would like it to be, found 2 more so let's see how they are. Oh great cars I am hooked

Keep looking, it's getting harder to find a good one, but ultimate worth the hunt.

I'm just back from looking at one from a VAG dealer, on the phone it was one lady owner and full VW service history.

After an hours drive, it's 2 owner and patchy service including back street garages and never had a cambelt!

Blower broken, so couldn't check if the a/c was cold.

Also watch out for rust in the boot caused by the mobile swimming pool under the spare wheel that this one had.

Good luck with your search.
