Nandos takeaway ordered. Take the RS or the Golf to collect?

For possibly the first time, difficult choice!

Drive one and have someone else drive the other so you can see it in motion

Though I'm guessing you run one or both on Shell V-Power or equivalent so would be expensive - but hey the phrase smiles per gallon comes to mind and this is almost double the smiles per gallon   :signLOL:

Nice cars btw

Haha, well I guess I've had similar experience when the wife and I have been in convoy, but not since the golf has had all the recent stuff done.

I don't think I'll ever see the RS in motion, as I don't let anyone else drive it!

Went with the GTi for the Nandos run!

Read through the thread and liked the updates - then got to these. Love the way this looks now! The BBS' set it off perfectly, as does the rear bumper and "stealth" look!

Thanks @Cocoapuff

I'm very happy with the look of it now. Just needs better brakes next, and better sounds!

6 months since the last update!!?

I gave the car some TLC and took some decent pics so thought I'd update this thread. It'll be in a few parts, so bear with me...

I'd been thinking about upgrading the brakes as the OEM brakes seemed pretty poor, but then after my wife complained about them too, that was enough of an excuse to go for it!

I looked at a number of options, and decided the Brembo 18z 6pot upgrade was the best bang for your buck option. I got hold of a used kit, including the adapter bolts, braided lines and 350mm merc discs. Decided to buy some drilled discs instead though. I then spotted some R32 rear brakes up for sale in the classifieds and had to have them! Got some drilled discs for the rear too.

Had the whole lot fitted, topped up the ATE typ200 fluid, and there was one slight issue...the front wheels wouldn't clear the calipers!

The garage managed to get hold of some 12mm spacers, which allowed just enough clearance. However, the ET47 wheels were now effectively ET35. Queue loads of rubbing!!

I could've tried to make the BBS's work if I increased camber and rolled arches, but I decided to just change the wheels. I looked at the usual big brake clearance options (OZ wheels or Team Dynamics), but neither did it for me. After a forum member tipped me off to US based Neuspeed, I got in contact with them about their newest design and confirmed they'd clear the 18z's (they checked vs a scale diagram of the brakes). Ordered through Awesome, and they arrived from the US a couple of weeks later.

I got them fitted and they look great! Sold the BBS wheels.

One slight problem though - they exposed just how rusty the hubs of the new MTEC discs were! I neglected to notice when I ordered the discs that for £25 I could've got them coated silver or black. Doh.

That brings us to today...

This is how the car looked when I started:

And the rusty hubs:

I gave the car a clean and got started.

Sanded off the rust as best I could, ready for paint

After paint on one corner. Repeat for the other 3...

While the paint was drying, I attended to some scratches on the wing, polished up with my DA. The wife is adamant she has nothing to do with them...

I also gave the interior a clean, and sealed with chemical guys jetseal.

Now that looks stunning. The alloys look like the VW Motorsport alloys, which I'm looking for.

Looks great  :drinking:

Just did the hubs on mine a couple of weeks ago, makes some difference to the overall look of the car!

Nice location for the pictures too  :happy2:

Chris
It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

Looks awesome!

Out of curiosity how much did you sell the BBS for? I would have loved to have taken them off your hands!

Thanks guys!

True - I didn't actually talk about the brake setup! In a word: epic.

They just feel so strong, with amazing bite. They inspire a lot of confidence, whereas the OEM brakes did the opposite! I'd have to say they actually feel more powerful than the brakes on my RS4 - although they obviously are trying to stop a much heavier car, and the pads take some time to warm up.

If I compare to the RS- the new GTi setup does take a little getting used to; the RS4 brakes are more progressive and the first couple of times I apply the brakes in the GTi, I find myself stopping a lot quicker than I meant to!

All in all though, it really pulls together the whole driving experience of the GTi, and was the one area that was really lacking before. It's a hoot to drive now.

Thanks!

They went for £650 for a quick sale, as they are (without refurb) and collected. I could have got more, but then would have had the hassle of getting the kerbing fixed, putting up an ad, and possibly posting them. Went to a guy on audisport that had a wanted ad up for 18" BBS wheels.
