Gear lever play
« on: September 29, 2015, 10:16:33 am »
Hello,

When in gear the level has a large amount of play in it if you choose to move this back and forth (it is solid otherwise). As the GTI is still under warranty I am going to pop it back yet any ideas as the potential cause / fix?  Would you deem this a warranty issue?

Many thanks.

Could be the gear linkage and or bushes on them, you can kind of reset them, theres a YT vid about it, or upgrade the bushes for a firmer feel.
It could also be the in the cabin the gear lever, has a plastic bit that wears over time and can cause similar issues.
If its under warranty worth having a chat with them. :happy2:

Thanks for this - if not under warranty what sort of costs are we talking about?

Thank you.

I had same issue. Fitted a quickshift and some draft design bushes and this made the world of difference.

For the bush under the gear stick about £3.00... 15 mins to fit, you may need an extra hand to help you with this.

If i remember correctly about £40.00 odd quid for the 42dd bush kits in at the linkages, just make sure you order the correct bushes, as they can be easly mixed up...  A photo always helps of your old bushes...!

Try @vRSAlex  at aks tuning for the bushes... or awesome GTI

A short shifter and side to side shifter will tighten things up also...

Do you have a part number for the bush under the gear stick?

What was the issue with yours in the end? Mine has a bit of play but it's not as bad as yours!

According to my mechanic (indie specialist) the bush wasn't the issue. Maybe a stretched cable somewhere. Put the eBay quickshift on and it is much better. Not fixed the original issue but got around it I guess. I ordered the wrong 42 draft design bushes. My car is a 57 reg but a 2008 car. I ordered 2007 bushes. Yet to fit these as its a 70 mile round trip to garage I use.

I've ordered one from TPS now else I would have had it.

Did you end up using the 42DD bushes as mine is a 2005, I will need some when I fit my quick shifter.
