Noise in neutral and clutch engaged

I've noticed when I stop and put the car into neutral and release the clutch pedal, that I hear noise from the clutch. A sort of a rotating consistent sound, not overly loud.

When I depress the pedal the sounds goes away.

No clutch slip, no hesitation in changing gears, although first sometimes from stationary feels like it jumps or pings inside. No idea if related.

Car sometimes struggles to turnover when cold but hear this is a common FSI quirk.

Anyone else have this noise?

I remember a similar thing in my GTI, think it's just a common noise. As long as the bite is good and there's no slip, I wouldn't worry.

Even in neutral with the clutch pedal out the input shaft and the lay shaft of the gear box is still turning if you push the pedal in the noise should go
Lay shaft noise is not unusual i remember the first time I was under the car in a pit with the engine running I was surprised at he loud the gearbox was
But yours sounds as if it could be the dual mass flywheel on the way out not the gear box

Find someone else with the same car and have a listen is the only real way to be honest.

If the cars going OK wouldn't worry too much if its the flywheel it will get worse if its the gear box its probably always been like that you could. check the gearbox oil level just keep one ear on it

Sounds like a noisy clutch release bearing to me, had it on cars before. Nothing to worry about

Ah right. Not heard of that. Would that happen even when idle and no contact with the pedal?

My car makes exactly the same noise. When I bought it the clutch use to occassionally stick and the bite point would nearly go to the floor, I was told it's probably the clutch slave cylinder. But since then it seems to have cured itself (I suspect air in the system) although it can be quite jerky when letting off the clutch in gear no matter how smooth you are. I have brought a replacement clutch kit just in case it does one day fail and it would be worth changing the DMF as well whilst the box is off.

The noise itself I suspect is probably either the input shaft bearing, DMF or clutch release bearing but the only way to really find out would be to take the box off.

Cheers, would this require the same amount of time for the garage to fix/diagnose as to replace the clutch? Or is it something that can be changed without a hefty labour bill?

The clutch release bearing is integrated with the slave cylinder which is unfortunately in the gearbox housing, so it's a box off job.

Ah ok, are there any other symptoms of the clutch release bearing on its way out? To be sure before going down that route?
