Guys,

Had the Cambelt replaced around 1k ago at a good price.

Before and since, the car always sounded a bit ropey on tick-over, even for a 4cylinder car. My previous two cars were 4 cylinders and sounded the same. I've even seen HD quality videos on youtube where R32 V6's and BMW straight 6 vehicles sound a bit rackety on tick over & idle revs, but I wouldn't expect the GTI to be so noticeable.

Whilst I had the cambelt done, I did specifically request the cambelt chain tensioner be done too which is apparently the regular procedure anyway. It also lists that it was replaced on the invoice/receipt I got for the job, plus the Specialist I use I trust thoroughly so there's no reason to suggest this wasn't replaced.

Whilst I'm aware many probably suffer from this and it's not much too worry about, are there further parts I can replace to target this issue and make it sound smoother?

I understand the cam follower is one? - If so, is it easy to do?

when fitting the bsh catch can, i never fitted the inlet manifold cap correctly and it idled like a bag of spanners. tightened it a bit and it was fine. so could your PCV be a bit faulty maaybe. it is a known weakpoint.

Second that... I had a rough idle.  PCV was replaced under warranty.  Apparently it a known issue.  Since then I have gone for the BSH Stage 1 fix which has improved things further still...

When you refer to 'PCV' chaps, that's the Positive Crankcase Ventilation right?

If I take it to my regularly used specialist, shall I start with asking them to tighten the inlet manifold cap firstly?
If so and that doesn't improve matters, I'll have to look at replacing the PCV under warranty but I doubt VW will be willing to do so unless I can 'make' a problem with it.

The OEM one is a pathetic plastic contraption... I simply complained about a rough idle and the dealer offered to replace it as there's a known recall on the part.

I've been told there is diaphragm in it that tends to go - so they replace the whole unit.

..........i bet your's is an early 05 AXX engine code ?.If so i would say it needs the small cam chain & tensioner replaced.Mine was doing the same thing,sort of loud diesel rattle on tick over ?.Had mine replaced & it's fine now.

Hmn, that's interesting. I've noticed mine rattling a bit of late (before the really cold weather started) - also an AXX. How much was the procedure?

I had mine done under a warranty i took out with the car (after a lot of hard work on my part) the garage that did the work said the chain was so slack you could pull it from the drive wheels hence the reason you get the diesel rattle. Don't think the parts are very expensive, i would think around 300 quid all in wouldn't be far off.
Thing is when you come to sell who is going to buy it when it rattles like a barstewards ? another reason i wanted it doing.

That's interesting GH but mines an 06 plate, I don't know it's actual birth date though tbh. Could have sat around before being registered...
As far as I'm told, the cam chain and tensioner were indeed replaced during the cambelt job.

My first dealer said "its only got a belt", so I told them I'd take it to a decent dealer, second dealer (whilst doing cambelt) couldn't replicate the noise apparently.

Parkway N'ton @ Riverside say this about everything Tom. I only get stuff done if I give VCDS print outs or take them for a drive and show the issue first hand!

Parkway was the first dealer Pete, the second was Towcester.

Both seem too lazy to even look!  My warranty's up in 6 weeks so I'm on borrowed time if my chain is going!

As I expected really. I'd say try Kettering, but they're even worse. Milton Keynes have a dealer do they not?

I presume you'll take it back to show something's not right then, even in writing from a VAG specialist?

..........i did a search on the net for a cut away picture of the engine,you can see the chain on the right hand side close to the top of the engine.Printed this off & took it along details i also printed off from a thread that was on www.golfgti.co.uk .There is a lot about the very same thing under the title ''my golf sounds like a diesel''.There was a lad on there (can't remember his user name )but his real name is Chris & he was a great help with info & part numbers.Try & get them to hear the engine when cold,mine was very quiet on tick over when cold just rattled like a barstewards when warm.

I called my local VW Specialist today and he said to fit the cam follower is a pretty intense job as it sits in the head, have I bought the wrong part? It only cost 6 or so quid so if it is I'm not bothered.

My exhaust is blowing a little now so could the rough sound of the belts and the 'ticking' be caused mostly by this?
