Rear spring replacement cost
« on: October 09, 2015, 09:45:46 pm »
Just had the car serviced and the rear springs are corroded so could do with being replaced.  Dealer has quoted £451 to replace, which seems a bit steep just for springs, unless it's for the shocks aswell?

I'm just wondering - are the springs very expensive for the mk5?  Looking at the coloured dots on the spring the last number is 1K0 511 115 EC.

£451??!!

They are the easiest springs in the world to replace, if a garage charges more than an hours labour then they are ripping you off (will be done in less than an hour).
Even the rear struts are quick and simple to swap.

See how much the springs are from TPS, or a dealer if your local won't sell to you, then have a garage fit them if you don't want to do it yourself. Will be nowhere near £451 that way
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

That's what I thought.  I've did the springs on my mk4 in the summer and its a similar set up on the mk5 from what I can see.

I need to check with the dealer to see what the £451 includes as I didn't get a breakdown - just a figure on the 'health check sheet'.   I reckon it must include the struts too.

I had the same issue highlighted to me from my VW garage. Missed a set on here being given away for free.

Not had any quotes done though on the cost. Let me know if you have any joy

I replaced the rear springs myself. Bought from Listers VW in Nuneaton - £150 for the pair.
With the shorter GTI springs you don't even need to pre-compress. I just put the rear of the car onto axle stands, took the tension under the control arm and lowered with a trolley jack after removing the bolt. Lifted the control arm back up with the jack to put the bolt back in. Even if they charged for 1 hour, they are ripping you off.

I rang up another dealer for the price of the parts.  They wired £88 per spring.

From reading and what dealer said, there are a few types of springs, mine are colour coded blue/pink/yellow/yellow.
