Jumping to 1st gear
« on: October 13, 2015, 10:48:39 pm »
So sometimes my car jumps to 1st gear (DSG) when travelling at speeds where it shouldn't be in 1st gear! Strangely it only seems to happen when going round a corner... Il be going at 30mph ish and approach the bend and brake to take the corner. Now mid corner or just after the corner, the car lurches as it's dropped to 1st gear! It quickly shifts up back to 3rd gear but obviously the revs shoot right up while in 1st momentarily. Really weird

Happens about once a day. I had the dsg oil service only a couple of months ago, and did a DSG reset at the weekend.

If I'm slowing down to a traffic light or something it just smoothly rolls into 1st gear and stops. A little part of me thinks I'm driving it wrong?!

It's strange though, it doesn't have problems going up from 1st to 2nd etc or make any knocks etc. It reverses fine. It does however kangaroo slightly when setting off for the first time in the day when its cold. But once its going it doesn't have any problem going from 1st to 2nd and vice versa.

I might look into getting a DSG Refurb/ repair... what do people think?

might not solve your problem but worth a try first

have someone with VCDS do a reset of your gearbox, only takes a few minutes but it could help

I've actually done a VCDS reset at the weekend and it didn't solve anything.

I'm starting to wonder whether the DSG service I had done a while ago has brought it on. I don't think it was happening before then. Anyone think its worth getting another one day at the main dealers instead of an independent?

As long as genuine oil and filter was used it shouldn't matter.

I think it probably was.

Its strange. 95 percent of the time it stays in the right gear but every now and again it jumps to first when I think it should only go to second. Im probably traveling at 10-15mph when it jumps to first.

Some other things ive noticed - the engine idles at about 700-750 which seems a little low.

If your stopped, and in neutral or park, and go straight to drive then the car will start pulling, as usual but then goes up a gear to 2nd. Normally it needs to hit 1500 rpm to change gear. I think this has started since the reset.

Could a dsg remap sort out the issues?

Thanks

Sorry for another post but thought I'd post to let people know my conclusion.

I think its my driving

I think that I'm pressing the accelerator too hard after slowing down, which is telling the car to drop gears to pick the speed up and as soon as I feel the power I come off the accelerator it goes back to second which makes it feel likes its lerching

I've been a lot more smooth with it and it seems to be fine. I also tested it by slowing down and then mid-hard accelerating and it did jump from third to first to get the power.

what is it doing a slow speed up a slight hill or front drive
jerking or kangaroo movements ?

Its not jerking or kangarooing when driving up a hill, or when rversing for that matter.

the issue I thought I had was that when I was doing around 30-40, and had to slow down to 10-15ish mph for a corner, or a slight junction that you could just continue at providing there wasn't any traffic, id slow down to the 10-15mph, and then want to speed up again, and I think I was accelerating too hard, so the car would jump to 1st gear to get the power. it would lurch because once id let off the power it would quickly jump back to 2nd/3rd gear.

You need to keep it in manual mode all the time its much more fun.

This annoys me and gets me in trouble with the wife.

Rolling up to a roundabout dsg in second (D auto) Just as i plant the foot it drops into first. I don't think its dropping into first due to me planting the foot just bad timing.

r.e bad timing - yeah could be.

r.e always in manual - yeah but im not as good as the DSG and I cant match the gear changes in S mode

r.e Gets you in trouble because they think you're accelerating and they hate it when you accelerate?! Me too with my girlfriend! They just don't understand.

exactly what I experienced as there are millions of roundabouts here in MK. I think it relates to condition and driving style nothing is wrong with the DSG.
Some people will always just say "its the mech unit" but that is not the case all the time..
