Trade in Price - 05 GTI - 2.5k?

After a year of fun with the Golf, I've changed jobs so need a diesel   

Anyone any experience of trading in?   It's an 05, 5 door, 2.0 GTI in Red, DSG box.  It's fairly high mileage at 147k but has FSH, and nearly 12 months MOT, recently serviced and had replacement PCV.  Best trade in I got offered was 2.5k.  Considering I can't find one for sale for much less than 4k it sounds light but can't find one with as many miles.

Also any advice on what I should do with wheels.   The aren't bothered if it comes on the GTI alloys (fairly kerbed in places) or these almost perfect Mk2 TT alloys.   The TT wheels are probably worth about £150 (what I paid for them) to £200 (two new tyres put on since), am I likely to get more selling the GTI alloys (2 nearly new tyres and two with some wear on inside edge).

Thanks for any assistance.  Worst part of this is the SAAB diesel I'm likely replacing it with is more to insure as well.

Trade-ins are depressing but the lower price is due to the price that they think they can get at auction.

I let my Pirelli go for £5.5K with £500 off the newer car (Original offer £5K) back in May. 58 plate, 2 owners, Sat Nav + all of the Pirelli extras, 111K miles and very well looked after. The garage said that they didn't quite get that back for it at auction. I thought it was worth at least £8K.

The company that bought it started at a tad under £10K, which gradually dropped and settled at £7990. It's still for sale!
It pained me to let it go for that but I'd still be trying to sell it now! Unfortunately there is still the stigma around a car over 100,000 miles even though on here we all know that the MK5 GTI can sail past double that.

I don't know what your car is worth. You need to decide what the hassle is worth in monetary terms. Good luck.

Thanks all!   The SAAB wasn't ready in the end so Golf currently lives on.  I'm indecisive at best of times but Golf does everything I need it to and has the toys, just the mpg is painful on long runs.   Range is mostly the problem, on a long run down to Devon and back I need to fill up in the morning and on the way back!

What range are you getting, you should be able to achieve well over 400 miles motorway driving.

Probably 350 a tank but I don't like to go too low as run out of fuel once too often on other cars for it to be fun.  Two main sites I visit are both around 350-380 miles round trip so depending on enthusiasm of driving style it's effectively a whole tank.

Had a Seat Leon Cupra R before, 225bhp and felt a bigger car, but would get probably better mpg on average.

I feel you on the milage. Ive had mine for about 2-3 months and I've filled the tank....every..single....day. I do mega miles though.

Don't replace it with a Saab mate there terrible, we have a 93 anniversary diesel and I hate it. It's gm every part strapped to the engine is gm and it just breaks and falls apart, I think the block itself was originally designed by fiat. The mpg isn't exactly good either 50 is about average.

@GTI-Pirelli suprised at your valuation. I guess they mark it the same as a normal mk5. One went here at a garage a few weeks back for 9400, with more miles.

6K then i would have said its worth 7250 up to 8k why did u not try to sell on here

Well I did the deal, and now have a Saab.  I look forward to not being on first name terms with the BP garage attendant and being able to plug in an ipod on a normal phono connection without having to mess about with head unit changes and canbus issues.
I stuck the original kerbed GTI wheels on to trade in and took out mats, bootliner and the Audi TT rims so will be selling these on Ebay to make back some of the difference on trade in value!

You may look forward to not being on first name terms with bp garage attendant. However Look forward and get ready to be on first name terms and spend time in your local Vauxhall dealership trying to find parts for an obsolete car. Seriously though any probs with the Saab give me a shout dos I've fixed them all lol. How's first to second.

Being fully honest, there were a couple of issues (no impact on the trade-in price as they didn't ask):
Wheel nut over-tightened by a dealer so needed nut, drive-shaft, hub & bearing. Quoted £900. Could have done with a new clutch as it slipped on occasion (probably done around 70k miles after the Revo stg1 remap). Also rapidly approaching Cam-belt #2 time.

I have too much respect for the people on here to sell it with those issues, so I would have indicated them. Probably over £1500 to put it all right so brings it up to your estimate. The stealer only ever intended to auction it so it was sold as seen as far as I was concerned.

The last I saw, it was up for £7990 only a few weeks ago (started at £9995). I don't know if it sold but 4 months to sell it would have driven me up the wall.
The biggest issue was that I didn't want test pilots and tyre kickers abusing my pride and joy and expecting to drive it without insurance. Once it was handed in, I could get on with the short period of regret while I was falling in love with the Cupra.
