Opinions wanted on my joey mod...
« on: December 24, 2009, 11:14:38 pm »
I'm in the process of joey modding my headlights since I have grey and not the black inserts I should have.

I've split one headlight which was a nightmare, but it's ready to be sprayed. Now, my question is this:

Should I spray the whole inside black, like this:

Or should I go for the standard GTI look with the chrome base part and the rest black?

I'll get any opinions and weigh up my descision boxing day when I split the other light and spray them

This is where I'm at now:

 :drinking:

P.S. Anyone thinking of doing this mod, DON'T! I wish I had never started since it took m3 3 hours just to slit 1 headlight!

It looks cool fully black but I would imagine this will decrease the efficiency of the already poor lighting.........

I'd go fully black! Looks stealthy! Plus it will make them different to standard GTI lights! :happy2:

Why bother doing all that if your going to replicate a product you could just buy pre done?

All black or something equally as cool  (colour code the seperate bit etc maybe????)  :happy2:

Can you find a dark grey/black paint with shiny flicks in it?

How did you split them?

Couldn't you have just put them in the oven for 10 minutes
Golf R gone.

Because it will cost about £60 minimum for new gti headlights and £5 for paint ;)

I think you're right, I might paint the base grey to match the car and the rest black.

I would not recommend it. I tried the oven for about 1 minute and the plastic melts faster than the sealant!

In the end, |I had to use a heat gun, a screwdriver and a hell of a lot of patience!

Lights are all sprayed up now and I'm really pleased with the results.

I went for a combination of black surrounds and colour coded base (chrome part on standard GTI lights). It's really difficult to photograph as it is, but this is how it looks now:

I'll be putting the lights back together this afternoon, so hopefully my car will be back together tomorrow, because for the last few days, it's looked like this:

Bet they will look nice/stealthy once back on the car.

Good job though mate.... :congrats:

I personally would not have the patience for something like this.

I know what you mean, I nearly lost all patience while doing it!

They are all back together now after being off the car since the 23rd... That's 5 days of the car being off the road, tomorrow it will be 6 unless I pull my finger out and reassemble it!

You really need a lot of spare time to do this mod, or buy some spare lights to do it to.

Photos on the car will follow when done  :happy2:

All sealed and ready for mounting:

All they need now is a good clean and polish! I keep getting dirty finger prints all over them  which is spoiling the photos :ashamed:
