I've owned a few over the years and looked at this quite thoroughly. I went the electric route 'cause they're just better nowadays, faster, easier to maintain. An 11 year old would struggle with the constant messing on a Nitro (even though I'd enjoy it

Bought loads of spare wheels and tyres for us and had it all airbrushed. My lad kicks my butt though even though my car is quicker with a 6 turn brushless.
The motors are cool now, you can program them to produce more torque mid range or go for max speed higher up. There's also massive geometry variables and damper / spring changes / mid motor mount, rear motor mount etc etc, plenty to mess with so a kid can still learn how to set a car up. You can also see what pros run and get yourself a decent baseline setup and go from there.
