The beetle or lunch box could be a good choice will put a smaller motor in until he gets the hang of it.

But these kits are old so maybe a newer model will have less problems

Usually you can cap the speed by adjusting the throw on the servo or digital speed controller

I was hoping to resurrect my grasshopper 2 but my dad has got rid of it.

My daughter also wants an RC car (twins  :rolleye: )

The plan at the moment

2 x tamiya mad bull
4 batteries
4 battery charger
2 crawler motors
Not sure on what controller will be better stick or trigger so will probably get one of each.

Why 4xbattery chargers mate?
Why not get two fast charge battery chargers instead

Depends what you want to do with them Dazza.  I bought my 11 year old one of these.

Hobao H2 pro.  2wd drive with brushless setup and lithium polymer batteries

I've owned a few over the years and looked at this quite thoroughly.  I went the electric route 'cause they're just better nowadays, faster, easier to maintain.  An 11 year old would struggle with the constant messing on a Nitro (even though I'd enjoy it )  I was so impressed I bought a new one myself

Durango DEX210 V1 2wd

Bought loads of spare wheels and tyres for us and had it all airbrushed.  My lad kicks my butt though even though my car is quicker with a 6 turn brushless. :sad1:

The motors are cool now, you can program them to produce more torque mid range or go for max speed higher up.  There's also massive geometry variables and damper / spring changes / mid motor mount, rear motor mount etc etc, plenty to mess with so a kid can still learn how to set a car up.  You can also see what pros run and get yourself a decent baseline setup and go from there.

www.oople.com is excellent with reviews / for sale sections and specific car setup advice.

Just watch out if you get one the 'hop ups' or upgrades are as addictive as mk5 Gti bits

These look a bit fast for 5/6 year olds  , looking for something slow, bullet proof and can preferably drive on grass (i don't mow the lawn too ofter these days).

At the moment trying to find a couple of small transmitters although i prefer twin stick will go with the trigger type.

think i will get FLYSKY FS-GT2B

Sorry fella didn't realise he was so young.  These are bullet proof and not excessively quick, had a couple when my lads were around the same age and they gave them a really hard time, loads of upgrades available, particularly suitable for a dad who likes to change stuff
