2nd Cambelt change 4yrs but only 27k?
« on: October 19, 2015, 09:50:33 pm »
Hi
What do you chaps think , my 2007 GTI is coming up to 4 years since it had  a cambelt and water pump changed, mileage was 50k.  But it has only done 27k in the four years since. Would you still get it done on the four year cycle or is it daft after just 27k?

I would change it, my last one only lasted 2 1/2 years and about 29k. I knew it was going because it squeaked but by the time I got it done it didn't look too healthy  :scared:. Considering it has to be done at some point and it could be very expensive if it goes wrong.

For the cost, I'd change it. I know what you mean about low mileage in the time, but you'd be more gutted if the belt went and stuffed the engine...

It has still been under tension and suffered from degradation after four years.
I did my ED30 one for the second time on time, even although it was under the mileage by a long way
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Personally I wouldn't bother, maybe get it inspected as part of the next service then take it from there depending on its condition.

When mine is due it will likely have covered less mileage than yours has, and i will still be getting it done.

Definitely get it done - as already mentioned, the rubber will be degrading in that 4 year window.

Why bother keeping up full service history only to skimp on an important aspect like having the cambelt changed on time?

If you were to sell your car further down the line, a missed cambelt change would be enough to put me off if i was a potential buyer - regardless of a full service history.

Hope this helps

Rich

Thanks for your thoughts.

Yeah I think I will probably get it done.  Must admit I am a 'preventative maintenance ' kind of person. Just got a price from my local main dealer  (Norwich ) Inc water pump £449. Think I will be using my usual specialist as before!

I've been researching this myself (see "what did you and your mkV do today thread) and have found some VW dealers charge £349 for cambelt and water pump so you may have room for negotiation.

Indeed.  Rubber is a perishable item, hence the "4 years OR XXXXX miles" schedule.  Same with tyres and suspension bushes.  A car that's stood for 10 years on original bushes and tyres is in no better state than a car that's driven for 10 years.

Audi's policy is every 5 years/75K on the exact same engine. So I'm using that as my reference!

My Ed. 30 has 35k miles and 6 years, so I've decided to change the cambelt eventhough the manual doesn't states any required time, just mileage. I got the kit from VW and the box stated the cambelt had an expiration date of 10/2017. If it has an expiration date in the box, don't you agree it will also expire in the car?

The metal cam followers also have an expiry date, I wouldn't read too much in to it  :signLOL:

Yeah, metal stuff I agree 100%. Rubber parts, I wouldn't disregard. Tyres also have 5 years of expiration date.
