Judder plus engine light (changed coil packs)
« on: October 21, 2015, 01:45:32 pm »
Hi all

Been suffering from some judder plus engine light flashing when putting my foot down. Fault was cylinder 2 misfire.

Changed all 4 coil packs for brand new ones and thought the fault went but it happened again today  :fighting:

Any ideas? Could it be injectors?

I had a very similar experience mate, I installed new coil packs and had to renew the plugs the day after

Injectors normally only misfire at idle speeds when the rail pressure is at it's lowest.  A lack of spark shows up as a miss under heavy load, usually in the midrange.  So sounds spark related from your description.  Plugs next as /\ said.

If you still get a misfire, monitor which cyl with VCDS, then replace that injector.  Well, may as well do all 4 whilst you're there as it's a faff of a job.

Thanks both for the input - plugs were changed in Feb at VW service. Could they need changing already?

No way, they last for ages.  Might be worth checking them for oil fouling though, just in case.

Any other fault codes come up on the scan?

I went for NGK iridiums after going stage 2 in May and they had only covered around 500 miles in about 2 months before I had to change them. Not everything is created equally so its sometimes seems like luck of the draw for lifespan/reliability give them a close inspection for hairline cracks

@Pudding I think I'll pull them out and have a look just incase. I've read some stories people have issues with certain types of plugs in their cars and don't recommend certain brands.

@hlcst car is stock no performance mods but if the plugs have gone I'm sure I could take it back to VW and tell them to replace them under their service parts warranty?

@Pudding @hlcst so changed the plugs and coil packs and thought issue was gone until today judder came again. I can only assume the only thing left now is the injector to be replaced?

What coil packs and plugs did you end up going for and did you keep your old ones?

Kept the old coil packs but not spark plugs. Coil packs were from euro car parts and spark plugs were Bosch double platinum

Before you go down the injector route clear the fault codes and check all your connections and make sure the wiring looks to be in good health, then if that seems to be fine swap around your current coil packs and then see if the misfire moves to a different cylinder, if it does try one of your old coil packs. If nothing changes try it with your spark plugs. By doing these steps you will be eliminating either a coil pack or spark plug issue
One thing I noticed on mine when I had the issues was when I swapped the plugs it worked a treat but as soon as the car got up to temp the misfire returned so make sure to take it on a fairly spirited drive.

Thanks for the advice @hlcst I'll give that a try. What was your issue in the end?

Is it an indication that on my daily commute to work im getting bad mpg? I roughly get 18mpg on my way to work and return aswell which is a 6 mile trip of city driving and dual carriage way for about 2 miles?

Absolutely hate it when it happens! Love the car to bits which is the only thing stopping me giving it up
