Harz's new toy... RS6 Avant
« on: October 23, 2015, 09:44:48 pm »
Went on a looooong drive last weekend and picked up an 03 C5 RS6 Avant in Daytona Grey. It seems like a good one so far, drives well and looks great. I scanned it with VCDS and the only fault coming up is for the navigation because it's been removed. It has had quite a few owners and has just under 130k on the clock, but it's had a lot of money spent on it and seems like it's been looked after. It had a replacement gearbox in 2013 fitted by AMD and hasn't done much mileage in the last year or so. Being a 12 year old car there are a couple of niggles that need sorting:
There seems to be a bit of friction on the brakes and get a low squeal sound at normal driving speeds.
After a bit of hard driving the brakes squeal at an embarrassingly loud high pitched level.
The liquid in the rear view mirror has leaked so will need replacing.
It sounds like one of the rear speakers has seen better days, the CD changer and (I think) the Bose amp have been removed.
The drivers door doesn't close sometimes I think the latch in the mechanism is shot.
The navigation has been removed and replaced with a pioneer double din.
I can't change the date or time on the dash (I'm guessing because the navigation system has been removed, the menu knob by the handbrake does nothing maybe for the same reason)
It has had some modifications... Wagner intercoolers, Milltek cat-back, Billstein Coilovers. The previous owner said it had a stage 2 MRC remap (and gearbox remap) and was tuned to 520BHP. There is an invoice for a MRC remap, but no dyno print out in the paperwork to back this up. It does go though  :driver:

Cheers. Yep apart from the few niggles I mentioned its in great condition. doesn't feel like a 12 year old car at all. There's not many for sale at the mo (went to see 2 others before this one that were no good) the prices are are starting to go back up again because they are starting to become a bit rare, but I got this one for £9500 which I thought wasn't too bad :happy2:

Yeah definitely curious to see what the actual figures are. Will get around to it eventually, but want to sort those niggles out first.

Will you fit an OE head unit back in place? I think Alpine offer something that integrates with OE systems but offers better sound. Might be worth investing in a complete overhaul of the sound system though and just replacing everything to give it some proper nice sounds.

Brakes probably just need a damn good clean and service, the squealing is probably due to the amount of brake dust and debris built up in the caliper. Also, give the driver's latch a spray of WD40 to see if that frees it up a little bit, if not aim to replace the latch at the same time as doing speakers then!

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Lovely car. Great price :congrats:

I enjoyed your black Mk5 GTI build. Can't wait to see what you do with this beast :driver:

You could put the blue seats and steering wheel (Steve from edge automotive is one seriously talented dude!!) into this motor :jumpmove:

Cheers :happy2: yeah funnily enough I have been looking at a DAB/Nav Alpine unit. I will probably get new aftermarket speakers/amp/sub too. I've got some time off in November so my mechanic friend is going to look the brakes and the rest of the car over and help me get some of the stuff sorted.

Yeah still deciding about the seats and wheel. To put the steering wheel in the RS6 isn't plug and play like the golf plus I need one with flappy paddles, but plenty of time to decide. Want to get the "niggles" sorted first and then maybe some new wheels... Trying not to go too far with this one, but I also said that about the Golf

After a bit of googling found out how to adjust the date and time on the dash. Only a minor thing, but at least its sorted. It's a pain not having the owners manual.

Epic car. Driven a couple and owned an S6 of the same era. If my numbers come up I so would although running it might prove a bit expensive.

Enjoy. :happy2:

Had a puncture last week and on taking off the wheel discovered that the CV boot was split.

As I didn't know how long the boot had been split for and that a new CV joint kit was only £36 I decided to get the joint and boot changed.

Was happy that I got the CV joint sorted, but when I arrived at my friends house for him to do the work the car decided to spring a leak as I reversed into his garage.

After the CV joint was done we took the under tray off to see where the oil was leaking from. The pipes on the oil/transmission fluid cooler have corroded and cracked.

Also got a problem with my drivers side headlight. Checked the fuses and changed the HID bulb, but still not working so looks like it could be a ballast or igniter.
Managed to get a second hand rear view mirror which will save me a lot of money as Audi want £209 for a new one! Also got a used Bentley books manual from the states. Find these cover a lot more than Haynes. Got a used door lock hopefully will cure the intermittent problem with the drivers door latch.

The joys of RS6 ownership.  At least the DRC suspension has already seen the bin  :happy2:

Yeah I like the Bilsteins... Think I need to uprate the ARBs...
So far repairs have been manageable, but expected to find a few problems it is a 12 year old car after all...
