Dealer applied Supaguard - How long does it last?
« on: January 20, 2010, 11:16:28 pm »
I've fairly recently bought an ED30 as second owner and the car had Supaguard applied by Vw when it was new, almost 3 yrs ago.

I'm assuming the Supaguard will have long since lost it's effectiveness by now (am I right?). If so what do I have to do now to re-seal ? Do I have to clay the car? Will this remove all traces of previous sealant? Any advice on what products to use?

I'm new to this detailing lark so I don't want to spend hours putting the wrong products on before I prep the paint properly.

Any pointers lads?

Thanks TC.

Yeah there's a lot of good info and I've read a fair bit in this section now. My main question though which I can't seem to find a clear answer to is ....... can I apply a new sealant on top of 3 yr old supagard, or should it be removed first. And am I right in assuming a m/c polish would cut right through any old sealant and leave a fresh cleanly polished clearcoat on which to start again.

As sealant appears to be polymer based (ie plastic) I'm not sure how long it adheres to the paint, or if it should just be re-sealed on top of every 6 months or so.

Typically, the Supaguard and equivalents like Diamondbrite need re-sealing every 6 months or so...as per the manufacturers recommendations.

I have to admit using Dodo Juice has pretty much sealed everything.

Unless it has been maintained to high standard then i cant imagine there being any of the paint guard left after 3 years. Its not the best product to begin with to be honest.  :happy2:

I know it costs a few bob, but you cant beat getting a pro detail done, this corrects any problems and give you a good base to keep in good nick and build on.  :happy2:

i worked on a car that had super guard applied to it. It had done about 8k miles when i worked on it and the only evidence of it left was the scratches the left in the paint by the monkey who applied it!!

Well no, i tell a lie, there was evidence of it on the roof, but that was about it! it was a complete pile of poo! and as an option it costs a lot more than what a pro would charge!

Cheers Jay,

Unfortunately I live around the Cambs/Essex area so your a bit too far away, otherwise I'd def book my car in for a winter detail with you, your work looks A-grade!

Failing that for now, am I good to just wash and apply some zaino then? Sounds like I should not be worrying about previous supagard then at all.?

I live in the essex area speak to the Autoperfection guys like Jay they offer a group discount and the work is to an amazzing standard to.  Like someone else has said having a pro do the work is really worth it and gives you a great base to start from.

Below is a link for the work they done on mine last year was very impressed like you I only wanted to let trusted people near my beloved car and relied on this forum. A few other forum members have also used them and are happy with the results
